12/17/2012 Newsletter

Dear Families,
The scary news from the east weighs on all of us. As sad and confused as we are, and as hard as it is to leave our kids, it’s most important to them that they have the safety of their regular routine.  So we’ll have our weekend news and our morning meeting, and read, write and do math just like usual.  I want you all to know, though, that I treasure each of your children, and will do everything I can to help them feel safe, happy, and empowered at school.

The Hula-hoop Factory

On Wednesday, December 19, at 8:00-9:30, we will have the fourth semi-annual Barton Factory.  This year we will make hula-hoops on an assembly line.  We will need lots of adult help to run the stations.  At the end of the process, your child will receive a paycheck and will be able to spend it on a hula-hoop to take home.

Wants and Needs

Part of being a responsible consumer is thinking about what we want and what we need.  We will help students think about the really important things in life-  food, shelter, family and love.  We will look at advertising that tries to convince them that toys are the most important thing.

Friday Afternoon

We’ll read a beautiful book called “The Gift of Nothing, “ and spend some cozy, quality time enjoying each others’ company.  If the snow is right, we may do some snow person building.

Garlic!  Yum!

I hope everyone brought their garlic home on Friday.  It was fun to see all the kids enjoying the garlic bread we made at the arboretum.  Don’t forget to water the garlic!

Thanks for the snacks- we are good until the new year.  Have a lovely holiday, and thanks!  Kristin
