End of the Season, Summer, and The Future!
Wednesday, June 11, 2014 8:55 AM

Hi ultimate players and parents!

First, thank you all for a GREAT spring season! The number of players we had in the league this year was amazing to see, and the improvement over the course of the season of individual players and of teams playing together was incredible as well.
I have gotten a few questions recently about summer ultimate opportunities, so, if you are still wondering about options for playing during the summer, look at the bottom of this email--I have included descriptions of the summer camps that I know about. (I believe most of you received this information earlier in the season, but if not, sorry!) I hope that most of you play some ultimate during the summer, whether it is with a camp or not! There is no better way to improve than playing a lot, throwing a lot, and catching a lot. And playing is fun!
And now, THE FUTURE: This league has grown quickly in the last two years, and I am going to work to continue to add more teams and grow the sport at the Middle School level. I am looking to add at least 3, perhaps 4 more schools next year. As this happens, I will no longer be able to manage the individual teams as much as I have this year, as I will be more focused on the league schedule, finding coaches, and promoting the league at new schools. In order for the teams to run with more autonomy, I would like to create a "Parent Manager" system, where each school has a committee of 2-5 Parent Managers who would work with me on some of the important aspects of team management that come up every year, including securing a practice field, setting a practice schedule, and some other team-specific tasks that. I would LOVE to hear from anyone interested in doing this for your school! You certainly don't have to commit to anything now, but if you MIGHT be able to do this, let me know--I can't say enough how helpful it will be for me, the league, and your school's team to have some parents more involved.
On that note, parents, thank you SO MUCH parents for everything you did this year to promote the team and the league, help your kids practice, come to the games and watch and cheer, and everything else! This league could not have happened without you.
Ok, that's enough for now. Oh, 8th-graders: PLAY IN HIGH SCHOOL! That's all.

YUP (The Youth Ultimate Program)
This is the fourth summer of YUP, a camp run by my two sisters, my cousin, and me. It was the first, and it is still the largest, ultimate summer camp for elementary/middle school students in the state of Minnesota. We have grown quickly, from 30 campers in our first year to well over 100 last year. Our camp has always had a strong focus on Spirit of the Game and sportsmanship, in addition to helping middle school students learn disc skills, athleticism, and turn into great ultimate players.
All our coaches (except for me) are some of the top players in the college ultimate game today, as well as fantastic youth coaches. We started this middle school league as an extension of the YUP summer program, and it has been great to see middle schoolultimate in the Twin Cities grow at the rate it has since we started the program.
We have a standard YUP camp for grades 3-8, and an advanced camp for 6th-8th graders who are comfortable with the rules ofultimate and have strong disc skills. This summer, we will be adding something new--one week will be dedicated to an ALL-GIRLS ULTIMATE CAMP! It is for middle school (5th-8th-grade) girls of any ability level (tell your friends!) If we get a lot of registrations for this, another girls week may be added. Girls are of course welcome and encouraged to play in the other weeks of camp as well!
Cost: $80 (Scholarships available!) for four days (Mon-Thur). Includes disc and jersey. Six different weeks available--you are welcome to sign up for more than one week, as the skills we teach continue to build on themselves the more you practice them. View website for more details.
Nike Ultimate Camp
The Nike Ultimate Camp for middle schoolers is new this year, I believe. The awesome Minnesota Ninjas women's ultimate team will be coaching, and it is a great opportunity to have a week of fun and intense ultimate training during your summer! This camp is co-ed and offers a high-school program as well. You can contact Barton coach Brenna Kruse for more info on this
Cost: $295 for five days (Mon-Fri), June 11-15. Includes disc and jersey.
Edina Ultimate Camp
Edina High School's strong ultimate program is starting a middle school summer program this year. It is a longer camp (12 days), led by Edina ultimate players and grads, many of whom are excellent players currently in college, and their experienced coach Nate Wohl! This is also a good opportunity for Edina students to meet some of their future teammates/coaches. Amherst HS coach Tiina Booth helped devise their lesson plan.
Cost: $300 for 12 days (June 9-12, 16-19, and 23-26). Includes disc and t-shirt.
Twin Cities Youth Ultimate Summer Camp
This summer camp was started in St. Paul last year, has an experienced coaching staff, and offers a fun, week-long summer camp for 11 through 17-year olds! They are holding two weeks of camp this summer, both in June.
Cost: $105 for 5 days, includes a disc.
Those are all the camps I know of currently, and I hope ALL of you continue playing ultimate and consider signing up for at least one of these camps! Even if you don't, go play pickup with your friends at the park! It'll be a ton of fun, trust me.

Last Games Today!

Hi everyone,

I hope to see you there! And thank you, everyone for a great season!

Last Week of Ultimate and Summer Opportunities
Sunday, June 01, 2014 2:30 PM
We had a small turnout for yesterday's games, but it was a fun day.  They were looking really good and were succeeding with a lot of the things we've been practicing.  There were some nice stacks with good cuts, swing passes, and ladders up the side.  It was great to see!  There are pictures posted here.
Don't forget that we have one more week of ultimate!  Yes, we will have practice this week (though I know 8th graders and some others won't be able to make it on Thursday).  Next Saturday is the last scheduled games.  Please let me know if your player is not going to be there.

I've run across a few ultimate opportunities for kids in the past few days, so I thought I'd pass them along:
1)  There is a youth pick-up group that meets on Sundays at 3:30 at Armatage (soon they're planning to schedule for Thursdays at 5:30 as well).  I don't know anything about this group, but it might be worth checking out.
2)  MN Youth Ultimate (MNYU) Summer League Interest Form 2014.  You can get on their mailing list to find out more about a summer youth league.
3)  YUP summer camps.  This is Jamie's group and would be a great way for players to learn more and meet other young ultimate players.
Also...  the 2014 Minnesota Youth Ultimate State Championships were rained out yesterday afternoon and today.  It may be rescheduled for sometime in the next few weeks.  Let me know if you'd like to be kept up to date on that.

Our games this Saturday are once again at the Edina Community Center Upper Fields, at the usual time 2:00-4:00pm. It is hot out! Please make sure you bring water! (And your jersey, cleats, disc, etc).
Also, please try to get to the fields at least 15 minutes BEFORE the games! In addition to giving you time to warm up, it gives us time to change the schedule if a team doesn't have enough players or something like that.
Here's the schedule:
Barton X vs. Lake Harriet X.
South View Y vs. Barton Y.
Lake Harriet Y vs. Valley View
South View X -- Bye
South View X vs. Valley View
South View Y vs. Lake Harriet X
Barton X vs. Lake Harriet Y.
Barton Y -- Bye
One last thing: The weather forecast currently calls for a 30% chance of isolated t-storms between 2:00-4:00pm tomorrow. If there are thunderstorms, the games will be canceled! If there is light rain, we will still play. I'll be keeping an eye on the weather and I will send out an email at around noon on Saturday if I need to cancel the games. If you don't receive anything, assume the games are still on!
Hope to see you there!
P.S. There are still a lot of open sessions in the YUP summer camp this year, in both the standard and advanced sessions! Girls, I hope you are considering signing up for our Girls Ultimate Camp in the morning session of Week 3 of YUP, in addition to the co-ed camps! It's going to be great.

Memorial Weekend Ultimate
Friday, May 23, 2014 4:00 PM

*** See Photos ***

Hi ultimate players/parents! Happy Memorial Day Weekend!

In lieu of having games this weekend, we are going to have an open pickup game (or games) for players from any team! This will be a fun, relaxed opportunity to get outside in the beautiful weather, play some ultimate, and get to know/play with some of the players on the other middle school teams! I highly recommend attending! Here are the details:
  • Where: Edina Community Center Upper Fields
  • When: Sunday, May 25th, 1:00pm (going until approximately 3:00pm).
  • What to bring: Jersey (it makes dividing into lights vs darks much easier, a disc, water, all the usual stuff!
The other thing I HIGHLY recommend you do this weekend (aside from be outside and throw a disc a lot) is tune in to the D-1 College National Championships happening this weekend! Here is a page with a lot of info on the tournament, and many games are being live-streamed online for free, on either ESPN3 or by Nexgen: This is a great chance to see some of the top ultimate teams in the country, in both the open and women's divisions, play at a very high level against one another.
I hope you're all having a great weekend. Our regular games next weekend will be back at the Edina Community Center once again. See you all then!
Game Results and Photos for 5/17
Sunday, May 18, 2014 7:25 AM
Everyone played really well this week, and it's clear that they're working hard on the skills and strategies we've been practicing.  As everyone's skills improve and they gel more as a team it's more fun too! See photos...
If your player hasn't had a chance to watch the videos that are posted (here and here), I'd encourage you to have them do so.  I heard from a couple of players that the stack made more sense once they saw it in action in the videos.  Plus, it's fun to watch really good teams play!
Remember, there is no official game next week (5/24), but there may be some other activities during the usual time.  Watch for a message from Jamie about that later this week.
Game 1:
  • Barton X vs Lake Harriet Y (4-5)
  • Barton Y vs. South View X (11-4)
Game 2:
  • Barton X vs. South View X (9-5)
  • Barton Y vs. Lake Harriet X (5-9)
