A Culture of Reading

At Barton Open we create a culture of reading where books abound and opportunities for individual, partner and teacher led reading happen every day. You may have your own memories of learning to read. For some of us this came quite naturally, while for others of us it was more of a challenge. Regardless of where your child is in learning to read, our staff is here to help.

Leveled Literacy Intervention

Leveled Literacy Intervention is a specific program developed for students needing additional support in reading to acheive grade level.

  • Combination of reading, writing, and phonics/word study.
  • Emphasis on teaching for comprehending strategies.
  • Explicit attention to genre and to the features of nonfiction and fiction texts.
  • Special attention to disciplinary reading, literature inquiry, and writing about reading.
  • Specific work on sounds, letters, and words in activities designed to help students notice the details of written language and learn how words "work."
  • Explicit teaching of effective and efficient strategies for expanding vocabulary.
  • Explicit teaching for fluent and phrased reading.
