We are thankful to have our two new student teachers, Melanie & Amanda, from the University of Minnesota. They both quickly learned everyone’s name and our routines and expectations. It is so nice to have them with us.
In writing workshop we have been working on writing informational books. Students have each chosen a topic in which they know a lot about and can teach readers. Each student is working on writing a table of contents, a beginning that gets readers’ attention, chapters with headings, and an ending. Next week we hope to focus on editing for spelling and punctuation.
This week each student got two mealworms to observe. Most of the mealworms are still in the larvae stage. We will be watching (and recording our observations) the life cycle of the mealworms carefully over the next few weeks. We will continue to observe structures and behaviors in different stages of the life cycle of other insects as well.
Next week is spirit week at Barton:
Monday - Pajama Day
Tuesday- Twins Day- dress up the same as your friends or wear MN. Twins apparel
Wednesday- Get up and Dance Day. We will go to the Commons at 9:00 and dance
Thursday- Crazy Hair Day
There is no school for students on Friday, March 27th.
If you are able to donate any of the following items, please send them to school with your child:
disinfectant wipes, clear tape, pencils, snacks

We have been getting used to taking all of our winter gear on and off before and after recess! Please be sure to send the appropriate clothing with your child for recess so he/she can still have fun and stay warm.
We are just finishing our Writing unit on Small Moments. Students have been practicing focusing in on one small moment of a day to stretch out across a few pages. They have been carefully working with partners to add 'outside' moments about what happened in their story and 'inside' moments about what they were thinking or feeling during those moments. We will be moving into revising and editing our work with our partners this week.
In Social Studies, we have been thinking about the costs and benefits of different decisions. We have been looking at different books and finding the costs and benefits of those stories together. This week, we will be continuing to practice this with other books as students become more comfortable with the terms.
We have also been learning a lot of dances to take movement breaks throughout our day, which help get us ready to focus and learn during the next part of our day. Ask your student to show you some of our dances!
