News from 116 & 118 -- March 8, 2013
Sunday, March 10, 2013 6:50 PM
We have continued our science investigation of Balance and Motion. This week using a paper cup we experimented with what rolling spheres could do on a cardboard ramp. After watching the way a cup rolled, there were different challenges. Ask your child if they were able to ‘park the car’ or make the cup ‘fall on its face’. Next we investigated what would happen if we added weight to the cups. The children could tape 1 or 2 pennies to the cup and then roll it to see what happened. On Friday, March 15th, we’ll be doing our culminating science activity for this unit: Building a Giant Marble Run. We’d love to have some parent volunteers come to help us from 8:30 -9:30 on March 15th. Please let us know if you would like to help. Read more...

Balance and Motion Science Unit
Balance and Motion is the new unit we are studying in science. We will be observing and comparing how objects balance, spin, and roll, and communicating orally and in writing the things we discover. The processes of observing, communicating, and comparing are important thinking processes that your child will be using during our investigation of these interesting characteristics of objects and systems. P.S. We are in need of a few families, with dishwashers, who would be willing to take home our lunch trays a couple times a month to wash. If you are able to help with this, please let us know.

Game Day--Thursday, December 20
Wednesday, December 19, 2012 9:00 PM
Tomorrow we are playing games with our upper buddies in the morning. Please help your child choose a card or board game to bring to school tomorrow. The game should be easy to learn and not too terribly long. Remember to put your family's name on it.
If you have an extra game or two to send along as well, please do.

Candy Interdisciplinary Unit
This week we began our study of candy. Students thought about what they wanted to learn about candy. We started in answering the questions right away by finding out what chocolate is made of and how it is made. Next week we will continue to learn more about the invention of candy and its chnges over time. Read more by clicking on the heading...

We are sorry for the late notice.

Friday, September 28, 2012 7:30 PM
Our focus for the month of September has been establishing good reading habits. Part of this has been expressing reading identities: every child shared his/her favorite book with the class and drew a picture of a favorite place to read. We’ve explicitly taught some of the procedural expectations: how to stay focused, how to care for books, how to pick ‘good fit’ books. Last week our newsletter included an explanation of Reading Stamina. As a class we’ve built our stamina up to about 7 minutes where everyone is quiet, focusing, and building up those reading muscles! As the children continue to build their stamina and grow in their independence, the teachers and parent volunteers have been able to start some guided reading groups. First Writing Celebration
Friday, September 28, 2012 11:40 AM
Dear Families of 116 and 118,
Today we had our first writing celebration. We have been working hard since the beginning of the year learning how to come up with writing ideas and work independently. We learned how to be brave, to stretch out words and write even if we weren’t sure how to spell something.
Your child is bringing home the piece they chose for our writing celebration. Each child read a part of their story into the circle and the entire story to their upper buddies earlier in the day. Enjoy this story with your child and find a special place for it at home.

September 22, 2012 Update
Sunday, September 23, 2012 7:15 PM
Thank you for helping your child select objects for their "All About Me" bags. If your child forgot to bring it this week , s/he can bring it on his/her sharing day this upcoming week. We are finishing up our Science unit on Electricity. We had a guest speaker come on Friday to talk about energy conservation. You can check out the Minnesota Energy Challenge organization at this website:
In the next few weeks we'll start a science unit called Organisms. For the next two weeks we are asking for children to bring something on their sharing day that makes a connection to Living Things. For example, a stuffed animal, something that depicts a plant or flower, a photograph or a drawing of a living thing. We are going to start to think about what living things need to survive.
Enjoy the beautiful fall weather!

“Getting to Know You” Bag--Sharing for the weeks of 9/17 – 9/28
Saturday, September 15, 2012 9:15 AM
In Rooms 116 & 118 the kids have been working hard getting to know each other and learning how to work together. During Sharing for the next two weeks, we are asking that children bring in something that will help the class get to know them better:
“Getting to Know You” Bag
Sharing for the weeks of 9/17 – 9/28
The students in Room 118 and Room 116 are getting to know each other! Your child’s homework is to place three items into a bag (lunch bag size) and bring the bag back to school to share with their classmates. The items should tell something about your child’s life. If the item does not fit in the bag, your child may bring a photo of it or draw a picture of it. The bags may be kept at school for as long as two weeks. Your child should be able to tell why each item is special to him/her.

Tuesday, August 28, 2012 8:00 AM
For our first round of sharing, we ask the students to bring a favorite book to class. They will be showing it to their classmates and we will read short books aloud. We will also take photographs of the children with their books. The books will be returned home in a week but please be sure to write your child's name in the front cover.
