Welcome back to school after this long winter break, and welcome into 2014! I am very happy to be back at school and look forward to spending the rest of the cold days of winter actively learning and building community in our wonderful kindergarten classroom. I truly hope you all had a restful and rejuvenating winter break as I have.
Since we are coming back to school mid-week, we will have a modified week that will focus on: reconnecting with our classroom rules and expectations, reflecting on our time away from school, and catching up with all our friends. This will help us take off next week into our regular structured daily activities.
Also, be aware that I will reassess the kindergarten students in late-January to monitor progress in reading and mathematics. This information will be shared with you during our second round of conferences in late February and into March. If you have any questions about assessment tools or procedures that I use in the classroom please feel free to email me.
Believe it or not, we still have a couple more paper activities to complete during this week before we say goodbye to our unit on paper. So far, the paper unit has been a wonderful experiential learning opportunity.

Dear Kindergarten Families:
I hope you are all staying warm during this burst of cold weather, we will not be going outside when the temperatures get this low. However, please send your child in boots each day, because on occasion if the temperature is moderate, I will take them out to play in the snow.
Alongside our regular daily curriculum of math and literacy building, we have begun another thematic unit. We are currently learning about paper. The students are introduced to different types of papers to observe the properties of paper, and paper interactions. The unit is divided into three parts with focused science lessons/experiments within each part. The first part is “getting to know paper”- matching paper samples, paper collage, writing and drawing on paper, and folding paper. Moving into next week we will start experimenting with paper interactions, specifically: paper and water, paper recycling, and papier-mache. The final part is paper constructions when we get to make: paper envelopes, paper boxes, paper weaving, and a choice paper construction. Please look to the attached information for further detail.
*Our last day before winter break is December 20th and we will return on January 6th.
