Barton Students Win Awards at Model UN Conference
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 2:10 PM

100 Barton students went to the middle school Model UN conference at Augsburg College on May 12, 2011. Before attending the conference, students researched the countries they represented and wrote position papers. The topics this year were: Climate Change and Resource Sustainability, Food Aid, and Food Crisis in Somalia.

  • The top award presented for position papers went to Barton students Paige Kipp and Nagma Abdi, representing France.
  • The second place award went to Ellie Colbert and Rachael White, representing Guatemala.
  • The top speakers' award in General Assembly I went to Conor McClun and Clare Culley, representing North Korea.
  • Raamie Ebrahim, representing Germany, received Honorable Mention for speaker points in General Assembly I.
  • In General Assembly II, Oskar Soderberg and Seth Koepke, representing Indonesia, received Honorable Mention for speaker points.

Barton students were very focused and passionate about the issues and presented many thoughtful resolutions advocating proposals. Some examples include eradication of subsidies to agribusiness that destroy local economies, ending the privatization of resources such as water, monetization of food aid, debt forgiveness and agrarian reform.
