Wanted Wolf Ridge Chaperones

Please let me know if you are interested in chaperoning the Wolf Ridge trip. I cannot believe it only 6 weeks away...April 11-13! We will be sending a HUGE packet of information and forms to be filled out in the next few weeks. We really need to know who is planning on attending by the middle of March (students and parents) as we have a lot to prepare and plan for!

The February book reports are due Tuesday, March 6. We traced ourselves yesterday! Hopefully, they all made it home in the snow!

Stay warm and dry,
Becky
Room 106 2/24/2012

Greetings!! Sorry for the "adding on" to a previous message! My computer has lost all my contacts! Augh! I am hoping on Monday, when I log-on, all will be back to normal!!

We have finished up with our Holocaust Lit. Circle groups. We culminated the unit with a trip to the YPC to view "A Child Shall Lead". It was an inspiring, yet sad story of the kids of Terezin, a concentration camp in Prague.

We also are moving ahead in History. We learned about 8 explorers and their impact on our American history! We will be learning about early English settlements next!

Last week "reminisce" was a vocabulary word. Their writing prompt was to reminisce about a person, place or event from their past that brings back a fond memory! We had a blast talking about this! I now have a writing/art idea that I would like to do! Please help you child come up with a fond memory they can write about. It doesn't have to be a big deal, just something that makes them smile! Many talked about a family vacation, a sporting event, a holidays, a birthday... (They probably already have one in mind from our discussion, but just in case!)

We are also starting up "Free Read" time in class! Please make sure your child has a book to read in class on Monday!

Tuesday, Feb. 28 from 6:30-7:30 in the Media will be a Wolf Ridge parent information meeting! Please attend if it fits into your schedule!

Conference slips went home a few weeks ago. If you need a time, please let me know I have some slots available for Friday, March 2!

Thanks for sharing your children with me,
Becky

What's happening

Greetings!

It has been a busy few weeks!

We have spent the last week (and will continue into next week) working on "making movies in our mind" while we read. We have been improving our visualization techniques by using our senses to really "see" what is happening in the text!

We have also started talking about our next project...The Wonders of the World. On Monday, we will choose "wonders". Each student will chose a different "Wonder of the World", do a report on it and create a model. The writing portion will be done at school, while the model will be created at home. There will be more information coming on Monday! We will conclude with a "Wonder Museum" in the commons in January (date is pending) where parents and friends can visit and learn about these amazing "Wonders"!

We also started talking about "Sneaky Snowflakes"! The kids pick another student from the class and give them small treats (total of $5) throughout the last week of school before winter break. It is all a secret until Dec. 23! I will send home the specifics on Monday (It's a blue sheet). This is an optional activity! I will help out anyone who would like to participate but needs help financially! Just let me know!!

We will continue to move ahead with Words Their Way, daily language, vocabulary and History. (Our next focus area is on early explorers and why they choose to come to the "new world")!

Our next field trip will be on Friday, Dec. 23 to the Roller Gardens! Permission slips go out next week (busy week of notes home)!

And, most importantly...don't forget Pajama Day is next Friday, Dec. 16!! Yahoo!! (The kids love this Spirt Day!)

Thanks for sharing your kids with me!

What's Happening in Room 106

Parents,

We have been very busy over the last few weeks!

We just finished up our September book reports. The kids did a great job of presenting and creating a "book buzz"! I have many good suggestions for future titles! The October book report directions went home today. Please let me know if you did not see them! (It is due Tues., Nov. 8.)

Carrie Proetz (Barton's Literacy coach) has been introducing us to "Building a Reading Life". It is the new literacy curriculum by Lucy Calkins. It has been very popular with the group! It gives the kids a chance to read a "just right" book and me a chance to listen to and really understand where the kids are at with their reading!

We finished the geography/mapping sections in History Alive! We learned about longitude and latitude, natural resources and the geography of the United States. This week, we will move on to the migration routes of the Native Americans and why they settled where they did!

We finished reading Trudy, which was rich with literary devices...We will also begin writing our own similes and metaphors this week! (I hope to get to personification and alliterations as well this week. Although, I am thinking we won't get to that until next week!)

The MAP tests are over...for the fall. We take them again in the spring. I am not sure how the results will be shared.

If you need a conference time, please let me know!  I have time available on Wed., Oct. 19th. I can also meet most mornings before school and Mondays/Thursdays after school.

Thank you for sharing your kids with me!
