There are so many great things happening at Barton right now. For example, students, parents and teachers are engaged in goal setting conferences. The way we conduct these conferences is unique to Barton and I have had many teachers and parents tell me that they believe they are critical in setting the conditions for a great school year.

A few examples of things happening with our students include:

  • Debate, Choir, Soccer, Volleyball and Community Education are up and running with about 150 students actively participating. Research indicates that being involved in extra-curricular school activities has a high a correlation with student success on many measures.
  • We have community education programs for students beginning after school next week and already have over 100 students signed up..
  • We have extended day learning opportunities for students through our Barton Learning Center beginning after school on October 19th.

There are also a number of upcoming events that parents may want to consider attending.  Last week I shared a recommendation to increase the racial and cultural diversity on our Leadership Council. We will hold a listening session in the DeLapp Commons this Thursday, October 1st, from 5:00PM -5:30PM. This session will provide an opportunity for any member of the Barton community to share concerns and/or support for the proposal before the council discusses it and considers action. At 5:30PM the Leadership Council will hold a special session to discuss the recommendation and possibly take action to move forward with the plan if consensus is reached.

Next Wednesday, October 7th at 8:00AM will be our second coffee with the principal of the school year. These informal sessions provide parents the opportunity to ask questions and engage in dialogue on a wide-range of parent generated topics. Several parents have indicated they would like to discuss the possibility that we may become a title 1 school next year at this session so that will likely be a major topic of conversation.

Finally, Next Thursday October 8th is the annual Kindergarten Dinner at 6:00PM. From what I hear this is a great tradition and a big part of helping our new students and families transition into Barton. As with all Barton traditions, I look forward to experiencing it for the first time this year.
