Greetings all,

On November 1st and 2nd, 64 staff and parents from the Barton community gathered together at Dunrovin Retreat Center north of Stillwater to discuss our shared values, vision, hopes, and dreams for Barton Open School. This gathering was remarkable on a couple of fronts. Primarily, there are few schools that gather an entire staff and many parents together for an overnight retreat focused on school improvement and development. This commitment is certainly a strength of our community. Secondly, the level of engagement and depth of discussion around the values of Barton Open School reinforced the strength of this community and its commitment to equitable and excellent education that serves the whole child.

I have been principal of Barton Open School for more than 100 days and can say that I am more proud to be here now than I was when I first took the job. I believe that our core values are strong, albeit ambiguous to some. The 60+ leaders who served our community at this event examined our core values and reaffirmed a commitment to maintain the spirit of progressive education while working to come to consensus on the very theories and practices that have been hallmarks of our school.

As we started the year with a call to tell our stories, we spent time looking at qualitative and quantitative data, and hearing from multiple perspectives that remind us that there is more than a single story that makes up Barton. We believe that our story will continue to evolve, in the spirit of open education, to serve all learners socially, emotionally and academically.

Sincerely,

Patrick
