Kristin’s Class Newsletter
Clara Barton Open School       January 24, 2011

Dear families,

Yesterday 24 families came to school to have their mid-winter conference! What fun it was for me to spend a whole day telling good news about each child and hearing about each child’s new goals. We have only 4 to go. Thanks for coming out and for your continual support. Thanks to Steve, who came back to school at 8:10 to close the building for us!

Field Trips
We’ll be going to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts on February 2 and the Ordway on February 15. Look for permission slips attached.

Book Clubs
If you haven’t chosen your book club yet, now’s the time. An email will do- choose Mr. Popper’s Penguins, Trumpet of the Swan or The Sisters Grimm: Fairy Tale Detectives. I’ll send the book as soon as I’ve heard from you. The first book club lunch is next Monday.

Knitting
Last week we learned to card wool, spin, dye our wool, and had a try at finger knitting and our casting on lesson. This week we’ll perfect casting on and get started knitting.

Express Yourself!
How can we tell our stories through the arts? How are the arts woven into our lives? How do the arts help us learn? We’ll study the work of award-winning illustrators, make music, write poetry and put on plays. Our first author /illustrator is Leo Lionni. His Frederick is a wonderful story about a mouse who shares poetry with his friends to help them get through the long, cold winter. It will be a perfect launch to our own poetry writing.

Laura Balfour Dance
We had a wonderful recital from members of the Laura Balfour Dance Company last Friday. They did an amazing job of showing how we can express ourselves through dance. Laura gave us some activities we can do at home, and we have added them to this week’s homework.   Enjoy!

Thanks! Kristin
