Dear Barton Community,

This evening representatives from the student body, staff and parents met for a Leadership Council meeting at the home of Lori Zook-Stanley. As dark gathered outside, we shared a meal by a warm hearth. Patrick gave his Principal’s Report, updating us on the recent magnet school review (see last week’s Principal’s letter) and the use of cell towers near/on schools. We acknowledged the remarkable efforts of staff, students and parents on both of these issues.

We then broke into small groups for creative brainstorming about Council structures and practices, looking at the following questions:
• How do we maximize and structure each Council member’s interests, passions and strengths?
• What are specific ways the Council can better include other parents in meaningful ways? What structures might be put in place that supports broader involvement?
• If we were to have a team of ambassadors (Council members and others) whose purpose it was to share rich stories of Barton’s open program with broader communities (district, neighborhoods, city), and thus to influence the public discourse about open, progressive education, what might that look like?

At the end of the gathering, there were expressions of gratitude for the student-staff-parent community of our school, as well as statements of passion and energy for all that may be possible at Barton and beyond.

May the upcoming winter break offer moments of rest and connection!

Warmly,

Lori Zook-Stanley, parent co-chair
