Greetings Barton community,

I am thrilled to begin my journey with you as the new principal at Barton Open School. I have been spending time this June with Steve to learn about the history and culture that makes this school so special and unique. With each conversation with him and my other new administrative colleagues in Minneapolis, I become more connected to the school that many of you have considered home and get inspired by the passion and persistence of the people who work with our children. Through this transition, I will honor the past and bring the skill set I have developed through my years as a teacher and leader in Hopkins and Edina public schools.

Education runs through my family. I was born and raised on the north shore of Lake Superior in the town of Grand Marais. My father, a poet, and my mother, an actress, were two artists that decided to share their gifts with others through careers in teaching, directing, and parenting. They were quite a team - one that modeled core values of teaching and learning that I have carried into my life as an educator. I am able share

my love of learning with my wife Katie who is an elementary teacher and literacy coach and with my two children, Will (8) and Keira (6). They remind me about the importance of play and bring laughter and fun into my daily life. Personally and professionally, I strive to bring standards of excellence and a lens of equity into all of the work that I do and am passionate about helping others reach their full potential - trying to model that as an active learner, myself.

My hopes and dreams for the coming school year are that I can help nurture a school community that lives its mission of meeting the needs of each unique student, every day. I want to support systems and partner with Barton staff and families to help develop the strengths of each individual that walks through our doors. I hope that all students and families feel that they not only belong, but can thrive at Barton. As we get to know each other, I believe that our collective hopes and dreams will support a culture of learning that serves all students and of which we can all be proud.
