Middles Play on Anti-Bullying
Friday, May 24, 2013 3:00 PM
5th and 6th graders at Barton Open School worked with artists-in-residence from the Youth Performance Company (YPC) and from Barton to produce a play about the different kinds of bullying that can occur in and around a school. The play was performed on May 24, 2013 and focused on giving students strategies on how to prevent bullying by standing up for themselves, telling adults about the problem and standing up for each other. The play involved acting, set design, singing and dancing created by both artists and 5th and 6th grade students to convey a powerful anti-bullying message to our community.

The Older Primary and Middles Teams had a great day at the Horse Expo at the State Fairgrounds on April 26, 2013.
Friday, April 19, 2013 2:00 PM
The Older Primary and Middles teams will be making a trip to the Horse Expo on April 26. We'll see a Cavalia-like horse and rider gymnastics show and many other shows and activities. We board buses at 8:15, depart at 8:30. We stay until 1:15 at the expo.
Students should bring a lunch from home that they will carry in a backpack during the day. They will also be able to find typical concession-type foods as well. Please make sure that your student wears a good pair of shoes (horses can be messy) and is dressed for the weather. We will be walking outside at various times. Thanks to several 206 parents who are chaperoning, everyone will be in a small group, except during Ma'Ceo under the big top, when 3/4s and 5/6s will all be together for the show.
Please sign and return the Information & Permission and liability release forms.

Volunteers needed for Barton Ethnic Festival
Thursday, March 14, 2013 8:00 AM
On April 11, 2013 from 5:30-8pm the 5th and 6th graders will be honoring five of our community elders. We are planning to have a celebration with food before the ceremony begins. We are asking for your help in making and serving food to the school community. If you are interested in making food from your culture to share or know of a restaurant that would donate food please let us know. It will be an event open to the entire school community. Patrick wrote a great article for the Bugle, in case you haven't heard about the event yet.
Please help us create the Taste of Barton culture by contacting:
Thank you and we look forward to a fantastic event.
The Middles Team, Nasra, Kate and Karla
Thursday, February 14, 2013 4:20 PM
Beginning on Thursday, February 21, Math Masters’ practice, for both interested 5th and 6th graders, will be after school in Katrina’s room 202, every Monday and Thursday from 2 to 3 p.m., until the competitions in April. Math Masters is a Minneapolis Public School math competition that is held on two different Saturdays in April. Each grade level has its own competition. There are both individual and team contests, but mostly team. All students are welcome, no matter one’s math ability. It’s a way to improve and challenge. Katrina is also looking for parent coaches to help during the practice sessions. It always looks like a lot of fun!

Winter Goal-Setting Conferences
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 6:50 AM
We are organizing conference schedules for the late winter. Your student should have brought home a paper that offers times and a sheet for you to send back your top three choices. If you don't receive this, you can get them here. The sooner you turn it back in, the greater the likelihood that you will get one of your three choices. We are only doing conferences on three days in March.

The Middles' November Feast
Wednesday, November 14, 2012 7:00 AM
The middles team has traditionally held a feast in November. It is potluck. Students have brought food to share with their classmates, everything from drinks, salads, bread, potatoes, pies to turkey. We would like to continue this feast. It brings us all together over a meal, the original community building. Parents are most welcome to help and share a meal with us on Wednesday, November 21st from 11:45 to 12:30.
Your child can let us know what he or she is able to bring, perhaps something traditional from your family. Thanks for your participation and support.
Clarification: the feast does not require parents attending, only if you'd like to drop in, help serve and have a bite to eat.
