I am writing to make you aware of a staff change in your child’s classroom. Norah Antil has departed from Clara Barton School.  We thank her for her time at Barton Open School.

Parents, Minneapolis Public Schools Health Services has moved completely to electronic records. The health office retains no paper copies of records, including sports physicals. If you think your child may be participating in a sport, please keep a paper copy at home.  Although any physical exam you turn in will be entered into the electronic record, the coaches generally want copies of the original paper form. If you do not have a copy at home, you can call your clinic and ask them to send you a copy.

Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite you to be a Fast Track Scholar this summer!  This exciting program provides current 8th grade (going into 9th) students with the opportunity to meet new high school classmates and begin earning high school elective credits.  The goal is to prepare students for a smooth transition to high school. In order to participate, students must meet ALC criteria such as not meeting grade level academic standards, English Language Learner, or having inconsistent school attendance which significantly impacts achievement. AVID students also qualify to attend Fast Track Scholars, and teachers/counselors may recommend students.

Hello Field, Ramsey and  Barton 7th and 8th grade girl softball players

 It’s been announced by the Minneapolis School District that there will be no softball offered by the Middle Schools for the upcoming 2017 season.  But there is answer for those girls who want to play this spring.

Minneapolis Washburn over the last 2 years has offered three softball teams. Washburn is looking at adding a fourth softball team for those 7th and 8th grade girls who are planning to attend Washburn in the future and currently don’t have a place to play. Minnesota State High School rules allow 7th and 8th girls the ability to play sports at the High School level.

We have just received word that Children’s Dental Services has been funded by Delta Dental to provide cleaning, scaling, sealants and fluoride application to uninsured persons. There will be no charge to you.  Services will be provided at the Dr. John Williams Specialty Dental Center, located at 728 East Hennepin Avenue, Minneapolis, and will be available from 8:30 to 5:00 on the following days: February 1st – 3rd, 6th – 10th, 13th – 17th, 21st, 22nd, and 27th.

Parents, we recently had a survey where two questions were asked:  Do you read the Bugle on a regular basis?  Would you prefer a paper copy of the Bugle?  We received 134 responses and 91% of those who responded they read the Bugle on a regular basis.  Seventy-eight percent of the responses would not like a paper copy.  We sent a paper survey as well as an electronic copy to gather survey results.  Thank you for completing the survey and for your comments.  A list of comments was presented the Leadership Council on 1/19/17.

The Minneapolis Board of Education passed the resolution to strengthen existing Minneapolis Public Schools’ (MPS) policies and practices and to declare MPS a safe place for all students and families, regardless of their immigration status, national origin or language. 1st Invitational Debate Tournament - January 17

One of Barton’s 3 main fundraisers will begin in mid February.  FUNdraisers are social gatherings Barton community members host in their homes and elsewhere.  Tickets are sold and all the proceeds raise money for Barton Open School.  

Last year $10,400.00 was raised by having fun!

STEP-UP is the City of Minneapolis internships program for young adults ages 14-21. Each year, STEP-UP recruits, trains and places more than 1,500 Minneapolis young people in meaningful paid internships with over 230 top Twin Cities businesses, public agencies and nonprofits. STEP UP is a summer program.

Youth complete a competitive application process and work readiness training to be considered for a position with one of over 230 participating businesses in both public and private sector.

Thank you, Barton!!

The numbers are in, and it was a wild rumpus indeed! The teachers’ and specialists’ baskets were shopped, the animals chased, the choir sang, the bus shuttled, and the cookies disappeared faster than they could be refilled. This year was unusual in that the book fair took place the day after our country’s election day. So this event, which is wonderful every year, took on an added, special significance as a place for our community to gather and celebrate each other.

Message from a group of 5th and 6th Graders: We are concerned with the amounts of lead in our water and are looking to improve the situation. We are currently raising money to get three filtered water fountains for our school. We are close to are goal, but we still need your help to reach our goal! The money raised will be used to buy the third water fountain and filters. We already have $2,300 but we need $1,200 more. The other thing we will use the money for is buying a plaque for the science teacher and Green Team that raised almost all the money. We would like to dedicate the 3rd water fountain to her. We need to have the money by December 13th 2016, so that we can install the water fountains over winter break. Any amount of money helps us get closer and closer to helping make water at Barton cleaner and better for all kids. It is important that kids have access to clean water. If this money comes in we will be so thankful to all of the donors who helped us reach our goal, and will be so happy that we succeeded in helping our school. Your child will have their vision screened at school in the upcoming weeks. While this screening is designed to identify issues with your child’s vision, it is not considered a full eye exam. We have a number of students who are not yet up-to-date on their immunizations,which are required by Minnesota state law.

If you have received a phone call or a letter indicating that your child’s immunization record is incomplete, and you have not yet contacted the health office, please note that your child may be excluded if the shot record is not received at school, as soon as possible. Exclusion can be avoided by sending us the clinic document showing the dates the shots were given OR by telling us what the appointment date is that you have set up for your child to get the shots. DO NOT DELAY!

Hello Barton Family,
First and most importantly, I would like to say I am so excited and proud to be a part of this amazing community, it feels like coming home to my progressive education roots. I began my journey of progressive education before I even knew what progressive education was as a young high school student fighting for literary justice when my school began banning literary classics. I attended Illinois State University and received Bachelor degrees in Political Science and History. Following a short stint as a mortgage broker, an inspiring, life changing trip to New Mexico changed my professional path. I returned and enrolled in Loyola University Chicago’s Master’s program for Curriculum and Instruction. It was during my time at Loyola that I read, researched and found my true passion, progressive education. I packed my bags and moved to Minneapolis, which was and still is one of the few public progressive school supporters in the country.  Read more...

Band & Strings Announcement

Instrument demos were done for all 4th grade students in the Commons on Wednesday, Aug. 31. Students got to hear and see Mike play a flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, baritone, percussion, violin, viola, cello and bass.  Students were then given a form to take home to their parents/guardians to talk about whether or not their child is ready to learn how to play either a band or a stringed instrument this year at Barton.  Students will get an opportunity to try out 3 instruments.  Please get the form filled out and returned to Barton as soon as possible.  Mike starts the tryouts this Friday, Sept. 2nd!  There is a rental fee of $30.00 for the school year.  Scholarships are available upon request.  Band starts Wednesday, Sept. 14th and strings start Friday, Sept. 16th for all returning students!

Art Adventure Volunteers Needed for 3rd and 4th Grade Classes!

Who should volunteer?

Do you enjoy art? Would you like to learn more about art pieces?  Does passing on the joy of art appreciation to children interest you?  If so, please consider volunteering for this fall’s Art Adventure program. You need not have a background in art, as you will be well trained and well-supported.

What do I do?

You’ll attend a 2 ½ hour training session at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (Mia) in September or October. You and other volunteers will lead classroom sessions to review reproductions of the art pieces during the month of November and December.  In December or January, the students, teachers other parents and you will go on a museum tour to see the actual art pieces.
