Dear Families,
It was fun to spend time planning in “Chicago” last week, and I got a lot of work done. However, I am soooooo happy to be back in 102 teaching! It was fun to see Katherine bloom as a teacher when she had the class to herself. She was inspired by the story St. George and the Dragon. Katherine’s last day is Friday.

Our Buddies
Each student has a buddy in Kathy Scoggins’ 5/6 class. We are learning about water together. We meet every other Thursday afternoon, and sit together at all school morning meetings.

Give us Wings
Our service project this year is to support an organization called Give Us Wings. They help communities in Africa provide for clean water. You’ll learn a lot more as the year progresses.

Our Tapestry
Another year-long project is weaving. This week, our class will start weaving into the big loom in the hallway. Thanks to Jake’s dad Clarence, who built the loom for us. We’ll start by weaving in our hopes and dreams. We’d like every child to weave in something from home, too. Send a strip of any kind of fabric to school with your child next week.

Practicum Students
We have two university students with us this week. Mai and Katie will be teaching social studies lessons that are connected to our fairy tale learning. When they are done, our kids will know all about maps and globes! Mai and Katie will be with us part time through November 23.

The Author’s Tea
This week we’ll begin writing our stories for our Author’s Tea on October 29. Students will use fairy tale elements to create an original story, a sound book or an “I like” book. Our number books are also well underway. Every author will read his or her work at our author’s tea on Friday, October 29 from 7:45-8:45 (or so). Families will have a chance to look at the work from our theme, Magic Words. In the afternoon, we’ll celebrate the end of our theme with a “Happily Ever After” party. We’re hoping everyone can dress at a fairy tale character. I’ll be a witch!

We need:
