STEM
Academy (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)
Monday, May 24, 2010 7:15 PM

The
 Association
 of
 Multicultural
 Scientists
 (AMS)
 is
 a
 campus
 organization
 dedicated
 to
 improving
 the
 representation
 of
 minority
 scientists
 within
 the
 University
 of
 Minnesota
 system.

 We
 understand
 the
 desire
 to
 pursue
 a
scientific
 career
is
instilled
early
in
a
 child’s
 development.

 To
initiate
this,
we
would
like
to
introduce
the
 possibilities
 of
 scientific
 careers,
 while
 engaging
 children
 in
 scientific
 based
 experiments.

 We
 hope
 that
 by
 introducing
 science
 based
 career
 options,
 and
 by
 providing
 a
 fun
 learning
 atmosphere,
 we
 can
 spark
 a
 scientific
 interest
in
grade
school
aged
kids.

The
 FREE 2010
 STEM
 (Science,
 Technology,
 Engineering
 &
 Mathematics)
 Academy
 will
 target
 elementary
 and
 middle
 school
 students
 (ages
 8‐12
 years).
 The
 event
 will
 consist
 of
 hands‐on
 science
 experiments
 and
 projects,
 a
 brief
 lunch
 break
 along
 and
 an
 entertaining
 science
 show.

 We
 hope
 the
 students
 will
 have
 fun
 learning
 scientific
 concepts
while
being
instructed
by
 university
students.
 Our
 goal
is
 to
 motivate
students
to
consider
the
sciences
 as
 a
 viable
 option
for
career
 goals.
