Back to School Pot Luck Planning

Our all-school Family Pot Luck is scheduled for Thursday, August 26 at Beard’s Plaisance, from 5-7 pm following the Meet Your Teacher session from 3-4 pm at school. This event is an opportunity for parents to connect with other families that will be in the same classrooms, and for your kids to renew their friendships before school begins. There are 600 or more family members who attend each year, and we need to gather a group of volunteers to shop for a few supplies, set up the space, organize the refilling of lemonade jugs, and oversee cleanup. Please send an email to andrienthomas@gmail.com if you are interested in helping with this event. We will schedule a planning meeting for late June, after we all have time to catch our collective breath.

Web Site Volunteers for 2010-2011

This year isn't over yet, but it's time to start planning ahead for next year!  Parent volunteers are needed to work with teachers and staff to expand and enrich the Barton web site. All you need is access to the Internet and a desire to contribute to your child's classroom. NO EXPERIENCE is NECESSARY. Team Up to Help Others

The Barton Student Council and Community Education have planned a trip to Feed My Starving Children. If you like to have fun and you like to help others then this is the trip for you! On Monday, May 24th we will be taking 80 students plus adult chaperons to pack meals for people in need around the world. We will meet in the Barton Commons at 1:45 p.m., get organized and board buses, pack food at Feed My Starving Children, and return to Barton by 5:00 p.m.

Teachers will have permission slips if you are interested in participating. The trip will be free and open to 1st – 8th graders, until we have 80 people signed up. So, get those permission slips in! We also need adults to help chaperon this trip, so, join in the fun and help others, too! Get involved; it’s going to be a great trip! Please talk to Sue B. in Rm. 12 with questions.

Pennies for Peace

Students in Kitty Widdes’ uppers literature circle class read Three Cups of Tea, by Greg Mortenson. We learned about a program called “Pennies for Peace” which is a service -learning program designed to broaden our cultural horizons and teach us about becoming philanthropists – one penny at a time. The money goes to the CAI, Central Asia Institute, a nonprofit organization that promotes and provides education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of central Asia. The CAI has built nearly 100 schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which serve more than 28,000 students – over 14,000 of whom are girls. Our “Pennies for Peace” campaign will run from March 12 to May 5, 2010. Containers will be placed in each classroom and we hope that every student, every day, will bring in as many pennies as they can.  More...

Plant Sale Pick-Up Days Volunteer Coordinator

We are looking for a lead volunteer to coordinate the shifts for the Barton Plant Sale Pick-Up Days. Barton parents will contact you via phone and email to sign up for Plant Sale shifts for May 7-8, 2010. We are looking for someone willing to do the job for a couple years and able to (occasionally) use guilt and arm twisting when volunteers are in short supply for a shift or two. The outgoing volunteer coordinator, Nancy Polacek, will be happy to pass on charts, tips, and ideas collected over the past (twenty plus?) years. Please contact Felicity Miel Crosby at felicity.miel@mpls.k12.mn.us if you think you might be interested.
