Lake Day Volunteers

Get ready for the one, the only, Barton Lake Day!!! Yes, that’s right, it’s time for our great community event and we need your help. Lake Day will be on Friday, June 1st, 2012. We need adult volunteers to help with transporting lunches, set-up, clean-up, and activities at the Lake Harriet band shell. The activities will include things like beanbag toss, obstacle course, face painting, chess, kickball, relay races, jump ropes, and sidewalk chalk. The activities are easy and everything that is needed will be provided. You just have to jump in and play with kids! For more information or to volunteer, please call or email Sue B. (612-327-3547 or email@example.com), stop in Room 12 and let her know, or leave a note in her box in the Barton office. Teachers will need some extra adults to walk with classes to the park, so please check with them individually to see if they need your help, too. Lake Day is always a wonderful, safe day because we have lots of great volunteers willing to help make it fabulous! Join in the fun this year!
Barton Picnic Feedback

There were mixed reviews regarding the format of last year’s back-to-school picnic. Previous years were a potluck. While last year, every family brought dinner for themselves and a dessert to share. The change last year was in the hopes of cutting down on the amount of time people stood in line. However, there were many who felt it was not as community oriented as the potluck.
As I plan this summer’s back-to-school picnic, I would appreciate some feedback on the format. Please respond to this ONE QUESTION SURVEY with your favorite of the following two options:
Potluck Style Picnic in which families bring dessert, salad or side dish, or main course according to their children’s last name.
Family Style Picnic in which each family is responsible for their own picnic meal, as well as a small dessert to share.
FYI, The picnic this year will be held at Beard’s Plaisance—if construction is complete. As always, volunteers are needed and welcome! Please contact Andie Thomas firstname.lastname@example.org to volunteer. Look for more news about the picnic date and time in the Barton Bugle.
Volunteer for the Plant Pick-Up Days

Even though the deadline for selling plants is past, the deadline to volunteer for the Pick-Up Days is still ahead.
Sign up to help customers find their order form or plants, restock and water plants or review customer‟s orders at the check-out gate.
Shifts are available on Friday, May 10, after school and in the evening. On Saturday, May 11, there are morning and afternoon shifts. To sign-up call Julie Glass-Yares at (612) 790-8166 or email JulieGY@tche.biz.

Recruiting for Minnesota Math and Minnesota Reading Corps

Become a member of Minnesota Math Corps or Minnesota Reading Corps at Barton Open School! We are now recruiting members for the 2012-2013 school year.
Serve as a full time literacy tutor as a Minnesota Reading Corps member working with students in grades K-3.
Serve as a full time math enrichment tutor as a Minnesota Math Corp members working with students in grades 4-8.
Make a difference for Barton students by helping them become proficient readers and proficient mathematicians.
Minnesota Reading and Math Corps members receive a living allowance of about $500 biweekly, an education award of up to $5,550, and may be eligible to receive health insurance. All necessary training is provided and no licensure is necessary.

Are you interested in a volunteer project that involves being outside in our lovely spring weather working with colorful flowers? Consider helping with the Plant Sale Pick-Up Days! Thursday, May 10, 2:00- 3:00 PM to help set up tables and signs
Friday, May 11, 2:00-4:00 and 4:30-7:00 PM
Saturday, May 12, 8:30-11:00 AM, 11:00-1:00 PM, 1:00-3:00 PM and 2:30-3:30 PM to take down tables and signs.
PICK-UP FORMS - greet customers as they arrive and pull each customer’s plant order form from the file boxes.
RESTOCK - keep tables filled and looking neat, water plants and help customers find their plants or a wagon.
CHECK-OUT GATE – review customer’s order as they leave to make sure they have all the right plants.

You were all excited to become a part of the school community and you had trouble separating from your child who attended a mini class with kindergarten teachers.
