Dear Families,

The big day is here!  Our Author’s Tea is the culmination of many weeks of reading, thinking, wondering, and creating.  As we read fairytales from around the world, we always discussed the author’s purpose- why is this an important story for children to carry in their hearts?  The written word is more than a collection of symbols and sounds to call out- there is intention and meaning in every story.  Our students were proud to create their own important stories and share them with all of you.

Portfolios

The books that your child created for the Author’s Tea will stay at school as part of their Portfolios.  At Barton, Open we don’t send report cards K-6; instead, we collect meaningful samples of student work that reflect what your child knows and is able to do.  All work won’t be perfect; you will be able to look through your child’s portfolio, see growth, and make new learning goals along the way.  “Weekend News,” various math-focused assignments, and other projects provide windows into your child’s learning and thinking, along with our fall and mid-winter conferences.

This Week

After our Author’s Tea and Happily Ever After Party on Monday, we will spend two days reflecting on our learning during Once Upon a Time and “resetting” our rooms for the next Unit of Study, “To Market, To Market.”  We will launch our new study next week.
