Barton News 2014-2015
Principal Update, June 29, 2015
Monday, June 29, 2015 2:30 PM

Dear Barton Community,

Earlier this month, a team consisting of 8 teachers, 4 parents, Lucilla Yira and Diane Bagley met to conduct interviews for the principal position at Barton.  We recommended that MPS offer our position to Scott Bain, principal at Jefferson County Open School in Colorado. Unfortunately, in the end, Scott declined the position — the text of his letter is included below.

The search for a new leader continues. We heard from Lucilla today that another highly qualified candidate has become available to interview, and that this interview will be arranged as soon as possible.  Although our first try fell through, we are encouraged that MPS is supportive of our need to take the time necessary to find the right leader for Barton.  We are also excited that the search itself is helping us forge new connections with progressive educators across the country.

We welcome questions, comments, leads and advice. Thank you for your support as we continue moving forward together.

- Julia, Nasra and Kristin for the Barton Leadership Council

New Books in Media Center from Wild Rumpus Book Fair Earnings!
Wednesday, June 3, 2015 2:00 PM

It’s time for another heartfelt thanks to the Barton community for your generous support of Barton’s Wild Rumpus Book Fair last November. As you know, you broke all previous records for books donated to teachers and specialists and for store credit earned from the day’s sales. With the $2,374 in store credit, we were able to immediately purchase all books remaining in teachers’ baskets at the end of the event and order extra copies of books to complete several teachers’ reading group sets. Even after those purchases, a generous amount still remained. After soliciting input from the teachers and staff on the best way to use the credit, we were able to dedicate a whopping $1000 toward new books for the media center.

Angie Endo, Barton’s 21st Century Literacy Media Specialist, created an amazing K-8 list of books that represent different cultures and authors around the world, with special emphasis on the cultures represented here at Barton. The media center staff sends out a huge thank-you for these books that all students at Barton will enjoy!

If you have any questions or would like to help with next year’s book fair, contact parent coordinators Amy Langanki, or Fiona Pradhan,

Dear Barton Community.

On behalf of the Barton staff and students, I would like to thank all those who contributed to 2015 Lake Day celebration. In particular, Sue Buettgen spearheaded the logistics and provided invaluable insight into the history and processes. Elizabeth Christensen also championed our call to families to contribute their time and passion toward this important community event. In total, we were able to bring over 100 parent volunteers to this event, who supported not only the student activities, but also contributed an always-essential community involvement to our day.  Read more...

Donate Used School Supplies to a Good Cause!
Monday, June 1, 2015 2:55 PM

If your child has used school supplies that would otherwise be thrown away, please consider donating them to Mano a Mano.  This small organization is making a big impact in rural Bolivia. Partnering with a location in St. Paul, they collect used educational (and medical supplies) and send them to villages where they build schools, clinics, etc. Apparently there is such a shortage of supplies at some of these rural schools in Bolivia that when the kids finish using a notebook, they erase it and reuse it.

There is a collection box outside the Barton office labelled "Mano a Mano" for students to put there supplies.

Here is a list of needed items:

Notebooks (I'll remove used pages)
Loose-leaf paper
Colored pencils
Books in English or Spanish for grades 1-3

Thank you for your generosity and thanks to Brenda Johnson for coordinating this effort!

Call for Parent Volunteers for Barton Principal Candidate Interviews
Wednesday, May 20, 2015 6:50 PM

This year the Minneapolis Public School district has changed its process for selecting new principals. One of the important (and exciting) new components is a stakeholder interview opportunity.  For the parent component of the panel, we ask any parents who are interested and available to participate to send an email expressing your interest to Barton parent Fiona Pradhan ( by 12 noon, Tuesday, May 26. Specifically, this email should answer two questions:

  1. Why do you want to be on the interview team?
  2. What experience or perspectives would you bring to the group?

[See Details]

Thank You!
Wednesday, May 20, 2015 11:15 AM

Special thanks to many helpful Room 216 students (Ayub Omer, Ben Sheldon, Cade Heinemann, Ella Bjork, Grace Neis, Hamza Hassan, Jackson Jones, Jazmyne Armstrong, Keaton Amundson, Keshav Singh, Mohamed Ahmed, Monty Stein, Quinlan Jones, Pierce Ammerman & Will Pryce) and stellar parent volunteers (Missy Jones, Sarah Tarleton, Michelle Pryce, Victoria Neis, Valerie Hampton & Virajita Singh) for their great work providing refreshments and peace sticks at the plant sale to raise funds for Felicity's Native Garden! The generous support of the Barton community was heartwarming and much appreciated! Together, we raised over $950 which combined with room 216 popcorn proceeds, grants and other donations will cover the costs to establish this special space at Barton to be enjoyed by students, staff and families for years to come! THANK YOU!
