Uppers News 2014-2015
New Dates and More!
Friday, March 27, 2015 7:25 AM

Please update your calendars! We have just 5 school days left in the third quarter of the year! A few bits of important information about the rapidly-approaching end of the school year.

First, please help students check the portal this week/weekend to see if they have any missing assignments. This is a good habit to do together (Thursday nights when you are signing their planner is a great time to do this!) and helps students learn that effort is the key to their learning-- that they will learn more if they retake that one low learning target in math or revise that paper again.

Second, we just want you to save a few dates. We have moved Uppers Exhibition of Portfolios two hours earlier due to Washburn High scheduling their graduation earlier this year. We will now have the Dance Concert June 3 at 2:30 pm and Uppers classrooms will be open for Portfolio Sharing 3:00-5:00. This is slightly earlier than we shared in the fall so please change your calendars!! LAKE DAY has also been changed to accommodate some primary classes that will be camping.

  • Shakespeare play: Thursday, May 28, 9-10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
  • Lake Day: TUESDAY, JUNE 2, 10-1, at the Lake Harriet Bandshell
  • Exhibition & Portfolio Sharing: Wed., June 3, 2:30 concert, 3-5 Portfolio Sharing in homerooms
  • Graduation: Thursday, June 4, 2:30-4 pm
  • Last Day of School, Valley Fair Trip: Friday, June 5, (buses return to Barton at 4:30 pm)

Finally, we have been working on positive multi-age hallway interactions throughout the building, and we are thrilled to report that uppers have really improved our school climate this past week or two and have been much more calm and kind in the hallways, especially with our younger students moving through the lower level. We have been encouraging uppers to get to ALL classes on time--tardies were becoming much more frequent and learning was being interrupted by latecomers--and to bring ALL needed materials with them. Doors were closed when classes begin to emphasize the need to be inside that door and not in the hallway, and we have seen a marked improvement in kids getting to all classes on time and moving through the hallways in a more peaceful manner. Students who were late have discussed the problem with teachers or administrators and we have worked together to find solutions. This time of year we always need to return to the basics of our school culture, and have reviewed the expectations in our uppers handbook with students in homerooms also. This time of year, it may be helpful for parents and families to review the following sections about 8th grade graduation requirements (p. 8), policies on staying after school (p. 9), basic dress code (p. 12) and use of personal electronics and phones at school (p.13).

Please feel free to call or email us with any additional questions you might have. Third quarter ends next Thursday, March 26. Report cards will be sent home right after spring break. Happy spring!

Thanks to you all for the privilege of learning with your children,
The Uppers Team

Uppers Exhibition: Tuesday, 20 January, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Friday, December 19, 2014 3:55 PM

Uppers Exhibition of portfolios is an opportunity for parents to view and discuss the work their student has completed during the semester. Students are asked to share their learning portfolios highlighting progress they have made in meeting course expectations. Grades as well as teacher and student reflections on the learning process are included in students’ portfolios. This is an essential part of our Barton Open’s philosophy, and we ask that ALL parents and guardians come to view their student’s learning.  More...

The Uppers dance class is performing at this week's all-school morning meeting. They'll close out the meeting with a six minute dance around 7:50 a.m. They have been learning how much of our American breakdance and hip-hop arose out of movements from African community dancing and show this by going back and forth from breakdance to West African to hiphop, etc., to show the similarities.

Courage Retreat Follow-Up
Tuesday, November 4, 2014 8:40 PM

On the Oct. 29th Courage Retreat, the Youth Frontiers retreat staff focused on creating a more positive school community by engaging students in a variety of activities that build students’ empathy skills and teach safe ways to help prevent bullying. It’s important for the entire community to
be involved in supporting and communicating the messages delivered on the retreat. We encourage parents and caregivers to inquire about the retreat experience once the student returns home by asking questions. [read more]
