Principal Interview Update, July 23, 2015
Thursday, July 23, 2015 6:30 PM

As you know, our Associate Superintendent Lucilla Yira had originally scheduled 3 interviews for our principal position for today, (Thursday, July 23.)  Since then, more candidates have come forward, and the interview day was moved to Monday, July 27 so that the new candidates could go through the district screening process today.  This is wonderful news- the more people we interview, the better the chance we will find the right fit for Barton.  Read more...

Principal Update, July 19, 2015
Sunday, July 19, 2015 2:55 PM

Dear Barton Community,

We got some news from Associate Superintendant Lucilla Yira late last week, and she asked me to pass it along to all of you.  The renewed principal search has yielded three new, high quality candidates with backgrounds in progressive education.  Those three have already made it through the district screening process.  There is a possibility of a fourth candidate, pending the arrival of some additional information needed by the district. The tentative date for interviews is Thursday, July 23.  Read more...

Principal Update, July 13, 2015
Monday, July 13, 2015 2:20 PM

Dear Barton Community,

We talked with Lucilla Yira, Associate Superintendent for Magnet Schools, this week and have an update on the Barton principal search.

As you remember from our last email a couple of weeks ago, the teacher/parent interview team was expecting to interview another candidate early this month, someone with extensive open education and leadership experience. Unfortunately, this person chose to accept a job with an educational consulting firm so is no longer part of our search process.  Read more...

Principal Update, June 29, 2015
Monday, June 29, 2015 2:35 PM

Dear Barton Community,

Earlier this month, a team consisting of 8 teachers, 4 parents, Lucilla Yira and Diane Bagley met to conduct interviews for the principal position at Barton.  We recommended that MPS offer our position to Scott Bain, principal at Jefferson County Open School in Colorado. Unfortunately, in the end, Scott declined the position — the text of his letter is included below.

The search for a new leader continues. We heard from Lucilla today that another highly qualified candidate has become available to interview, and that this interview will be arranged as soon as possible.  Although our first try fell through, we are encouraged that MPS is supportive of our need to take the time necessary to find the right leader for Barton.  We are also excited that the search itself is helping us forge new connections with progressive educators across the country.

We welcome questions, comments, leads and advice. Thank you for your support as we continue moving forward together.

- Julia, Nasra and Kristin for the Barton Leadership Council

Tuesday, May 19, 2015 6:40 AM

This year the Minneapolis Public School district has changed its process for selecting new principals. One of the important (and exciting) new components is a stakeholder interview opportunity.  For the parent component of the panel, we ask any parents who are interested and available to participate to send an email expressing your interest to Barton parent Fiona Pradhan ( by 12 noon, Tuesday, May 26. Specifically, this email should answer two questions:

  1. Why do you want to be on the interview team?
  2. What experience or perspectives would you bring to the group?
