Room 206 Book Reports
Freak the Mighty

We began a new novel called Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick. It’s about the friendship of two atypical kids, who experience difficulties, danger and hard times together. We’ll be working on vocabulary and literary elements such as point of view, characterization, metaphor and simile, personification, foreshadowing, humor, internal and external conflicts, cliffhanger, and main theme. The class will write their reflections in their literature journals. I am teaching the students to form opinions about the story by finding evidence within the story to support their thinking. We’ll also discuss the story in an open forum, in which the students hear and respond to each other’s thinking.
