2/10/14 Newsletter and Homework
Monday, February 10, 2014 10:10 AM

Dear Families,

It’s so wonderful to be part of this rich community!  There is so much happening in our classroom and in our school.  First, many thanks to Nat’s dad David Chang, who shared his expertise with us last Tuesday.  After his talk, our students were able to draw a map of Dakota and Ojibwe territories, show what kind of house they had, and tell what life was like then.  We are hoping David can come back and share more about early settlers.  This week we’ll learn about pioneers and the importance that the river played in the settlement of our city.

NAAPID

Monday, February 10, is National African American Parent Involvement Day.  As part of our school’s Equity Team, I will be out of the classroom all day participating in a day long retreat that begins in the media center with a parent discussion at 7:30.  Zoey will be teaching the major lessons, with the help of a reserve teacher.

Community Discussion on Racial Equity

On Tuesday evening, all Barton parents are invited to a community discussion on Racial Equity at Barton.  Patrick will be leading this session, and will be giving us a strong foundation for our work around racial equity.  I’m planning to be there and I hope many of you can come too!

Spirit Week

Here is the schedule for our Barton Spirit Week:

Monday- Sports Day (wear a jersey, uniform, etc to represent a favorite sport.

Tuesday- Get up and dance day!  We will have “just dance” going on the Wii in the commons, and lots of other dancing too.

Wednesday- Hat Day

Thursday- Barton Spirit Day (wear Barton gear OR Barton colors- black and red.)

Friday- Rainbow Day- represent your class by wearing a special color.  First graders wear yellow, second graders wear red.

Valentine’s Day

We are planning a morning party and our first Friday Field Trip walk to the rose garden in the afternoon.  Remember, we are staying “candy free” at school!

It could get messy-

Wednesday and Thursday we’ll be painting our valentine boxes.  Send a paint shirt and/or wear old clothes.

Conferences

Here’s the plan- you’ll get a “mid-winter check in” on Friday that will give you a good picture of how your child is doing in school.  If you would like to have a conference, sign up on the sheet attached.  Thanks!  Kristin
