Dear Families,

I sure hope that the weather will cooperate and we will have 5 full days of school this week!  As much as I loved having a little extra sleep and a lot of time to catch up on neglected paperwork, and the thought of kids having extra family time,  it put the squeeze on things like spelling tests, permission slips and conference schedules.  We decided to just do our favorite parts of school (including those spelling tests!  We love our spelling tests!) and not worry about some other things.  We made clay maps of prehistoric Minnesota, volcanoes and all, and then pretended to be glaciers and squished them into the flat, holey state we know today.  We’re in the middle of filling the holes with lakes and rivers.  Next we’ll add our neighbors, Wisconsin, Canada, Iowa and the Dakotas.

We are learning about the first people to live in Minnesota through some stories and legends.  David Chang, Nat’s dad is going to help us out.

The Hungry Caterpillar

This Friday is out field trip to the Children’s Theater.  Most permission slips are in, but if you haven’t sent one, I’ll get you one early this week, along with the permission slips for the rest of the Friday Field Trips.

Conferences

I’m committed to having a conference with everyone who wants one, but it may take awhile to get there.  Dawn and I are working to figure out a creative way to meet everyone’s needs.  Thanks for your patience.

Valentine’s Day

We still need lots of empty Kleenex boxes!  Blow those noses!

Thanks, Kristin

Homework Ideas

*Make a valentine card for everyone in the class.  They can be home made or from the store.  Please leave candy at home.  We will pass out the cards on Friday, February 14.

*Arrange your spelling words from shortest to longest.  Who has the most letters?  Who has the least?

*Make a word search with this week’s spelling words.

*Read for pleasure or for practice.  Bring a “just right” book home from school if you want.

* Figure out the four directions from your house.  Which way is north, south, east and west?

*Do your own thing.

*Numbers help tell the story of our city.  Find some interesting numbers about Minneapolis and bring them to school.
