3/24/2014 Newsletter and Homework
Monday, March 24, 2014 10:25 AM

 Dear Families,

This week we transitioned from mathematical patterns to working with fractions. It was important to embed your child’s identity and culture within this math block, so students began to construct the following:

-Fraction Flags (eg. “The ½ that is red represents American because I’m American. The ½ that is blue represents Somali because I’m Somalian.”)

-My Perfect Fraction Plate (eg. “I chose to hamantaschen to represent 2/8 of my ideal fraction plate.”)

-All About Me Fraction Strips (eg. “1/6 of me is a student, 1/6 of me is a daughter, 1/6 of me is a good friend, 1/6 of me is a sister…”)

Moving beyond math – students have had time this week to begin their individual brochures. We used our reading block to read about what families look like around the world. After each read aloud, students celebrated the differences and similarities by illustrating and writing about the beauty of all families and cultures.

Next week we will finish our brochures in time for our City Expo Party which will be on the 28th of March (next Friday!) at 7:45am till 8:30am. We hope you can make it!

Next week on Tuesday (03/25) we will also be taking our City Tour field trip! The weather looks like it will be about 27 degrees and cloudy. Please make sure you’re packing appropriate gear for your student to stay warm throughout our many stops around Minneapolis.

On that note, be sure to look for information about camp in the next couple of weeks. There will be a background check form going home in Bee Books that are essential for you to join us as a volunteer.

Lastly, when your student is planning to ride another bus/go to a different house (this includes playdates.) Contact LeAnn in the front office directly at LeeAnn.Sudduth@mpls.k12.mn.us with the following:

  • Name of the student(s)

  • Room number

  • Name of the other student’s address and a phone # of where the student is going

  • Name of the other address and a phone number

Thank you to all the families who have filled out the timeline charts that I sent earlier this week! Along with the families who’ve sent in pictures for their child to use for their brochure.  If you haven’t yet…send them my way by Sunday at noon and I can print them out for your child. If not, send them in Bee Books by Monday/Tuesday. Children that don’t have pictures by Tuesday, no problem! I will be snapping pictures for their cover during Quiet Time.

Class 102/104 decided there will be no spelling this week due to the field trip and end of the unit party. Homework suggestions would be: Selecting/sending in those photos, timeline worksheet being filled out, predicting what we’ll see on our City Tour, and talking about what their Weekend News writing will be about for Monday.

Have a great weekend,

Zoey
