9/24/12 Newsletter
Monday, September 24, 2012 7:20 PM

Dear Families,
We are starting our fifth week of school and have settled into some fruitful routines.  In the morning students are engaged in literacy work.  We do word work, read independently, and in small groups.
I’ve got volunteers for this time on Mondays and Tuesdays, but could use some help on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday first thing in the morning. You may read with a small group, do some word work, or might help get materials ready.

Science Friday

We had another fun Science Friday with our friends in Dawn’s Class.  Check out our class blog to see some pictures of our learning about insects!

Handwriting Without Tears

Look for a request for $6.00 in your BEE book and respond as soon as you can.  We love our handwriting books and we are working hard to learn the most efficient, painless way to write our letters, but the books are expensive.  Thanks to the leadership committee for picking up part of the cost.

MAP Testing

Next week the second graders will start the MAP test.  Each of the two parts (reading and math) will take about an hour.  No special preparation is required.  Let me know if you have questions.

Just Right Lending Library

Thanks for reading “just right” books with your kids!  The best way to become an independent reader is to practice with books right at your level.  Mark Paulson, Soren’s dad, is going to be in school in the mornings to help students remember to check out a new practice book.  Thanks, Mark!

New Scholastic Volunteer!

Marnie Piechel, Neela’s mom, is our new Scholastic volunteer!  Thanks to Kristi Smith-Knutson, who did this job for 3 years, and thanks to Marnie for taking it over.  We love book orders!

This Week

We will read The Brave Little Tailor, a story about a man who solves some big problems with courage and cleverness.  We’ll think about assertion, a social skill that lets us stick up for ourselves, ask for help, and bravely take the risks that help us grow socially and academically.

Thanks, Kristin
