About Mary
Mary Swenson
I have taught in public schools for over 35 years and have been at Barton since fall of 2006. I have taught grades Kindergarten through 4th grades since I've been at Barton!   I taught a 1/2 class for the past year and I'm thrilled to be teaching 1/2 again!  I have a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from St. Cloud State University and a Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction from St. Thomas University.

My goals are that all students feel safe, happy and are treating everyone with respect and compassion while we are learning.  I have a passion for reading and try to share my love of books with all students, helping them pick challenging enough material without frustrating them beyond their decoding and comprehension skills.  Because I found math somewhat intimidating in elementary school, I work to build a good foundation of math concepts with my students and try to help students avoid some of the gaps I experienced myself in my early years.

My classroom is comfortable and relaxed and offers many different opportunities for learning including pairs, small groups and individual options. Student choices are offered throughout the day helping students grow with their decision-making.  Students have the opportunity to complete a couple of at-home projects during the year which will help them pursue a personal interest as well as develop confidence in presenting something in front of the group.

The best way to contact me is by e-mail at You may also call the Barton School number and leave me a message or have the office put your call through to my classroom.  Don't hesitate to call with emergency messages about buses or parent pick-ups at the end of the day.  I'd rather be sure, than wondering about where your child is going at dismissal.   I check my e-mail at school and at home several times a day and will be happy to  respond to questions during nights and weekends.   I will respond with a brief note that I got your e-mail, even if I don't know a response at the moment.  Feel free to e-mail or call anytime.  Barton's # 612-668-3580
