About Penny

Growing up, I was one of those kids who loved to play school and I recruited my four brothers to be my students. All through school I wanted to be a teacher, and for the past 30+ years that is exactly what I have been doing: teaching kindergarten through 5th grades. I have not missed a grade!

My undergraduate degrees in elementary and early childhood education are from the University of Iowa. Yes, I am a Hawkeye! I completed my master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from St. Cloud State University. During the summer, I regularly attend Hamline’s Literacy Institute and present to other teachers at the district’s Summer Science Academy.

Away from school I like to travel, read, and garden, though the bunnies and weeds usually win. My husband is a retired Minneapolis principal, and our daughter teaches middle school science at Field. You might say, education is the family business.

This is my 6th year at Barton, and I feel so fortunate to have found a school where the families are so welcoming and supportive, the students are so enthusiastic, and the philosophy matches my practice. Room 209 is a busy classroom with hands-on projects, and opportunities for children to be creative and curious, and to collaborate with each other. The door is always open and you are welcome to join us in our work.
