Leadership Council Set for 2010-2011

We welcome four new parents to next year’s Council membership, Laura Balfour, Ahmed Farah, Ann Journey and Ellis Peterson, who are joining eleven returning members, Jennifer Bennett, Andrea Breen, David Curle, Nasra Hassan, Sarah Lahm, Glen Larson, Julia Paulson Mullin, Nettie Posey, Steve Richter, Brenda Zehnder and Lori Zook-Stanley.

Jennifer Bennett will serve as the parent co-chair of the Council for the 2010-2011 school year. She will be joined by Amber Damm who will take on the role of staff co-chair.

The first Leadership Council meeting of the new school year will be Thursday, September 16, from 6-8 PM.

Fall Parent Information Night

The Barton Leadership Council, consisting of parents, staff, and student representatives from the Student Council, is the primary governing body for the school. The Council is responsible for setting school policy, identifying yearly goal areas, monitoring school improvement plans, encouraging broad participation from all members of the school community, and guiding overall staffing and program decisions.

Last Chance for Lost & Found

Avoid Lice!

We have been seeing a few students with head lice recently. Please remind your children to avoid sharing personal items, such as hats, combs/brushes, sweatshirts, pillows, etc. Remember that sleepovers are GREAT ways to spread head lice. Be aware that sharing helmets or other sports equipment that makes even brief contact with the head is also a very good way to spread head lice. Playing dress-up/sharing clothing is another fabulous way to spread it. More...

The Barton Leadership Council is a collaborative group of teachers and parents who meet to help develop the policies and make the budget decisions which support our school’s mission. It’s a unique platform where both parents and teachers are able to share their perspectives and have a very real impact upon our school’s future. The Council meets once or twice a month during the school year. Meetings are held on Thursday evenings, starting at either 4:30 or 6:00 PM, and concluding (without fail!) 2 hours later. Pizza and childcare are provided during the meetings. Read on...

In the next few weeks you will be receiving letters that specify which immunizations your child will need in order to start school next fall. Please look at what shots are needed and, if possible, make an appointment to get them now. Waiting until fall creates unnecessary disruption. Math Masters

A group of Barton 5th grade students participated in a Math Masters competition on Saturday at North High School along with hundreds of other students from across the district. They said it was fun, math is cool, and they liked working together. The pizza was good too!  The team of Mitchell Hockenberry, Andrew Michel, Evan Ireland and Nate Bennett won honorable mention in the team rounds, Ibby Day received a first place award in the fact drill (perfect score), and Graham Myers won a third place award in the fact drill. Barton Student Plays with Minnesota Orchestra!

Evren Ozel, 5th grader in Katrina‟s class was one of 13 young pianists who played with the Minnesota Orchestra last month for 8 concerts at Orchestra Hall. If you missed out, you‟ll have another opportunity to hear Evren play piano in a big concert hall next week. Evren and his dad, Tadeusz Majewski, will be playing at O‟Shaunessy Auditorium, accompanying the dancers of the James Sewell Ballet in all Chopin recitals April 15-18. Join in the Mileage Fun

At our All School Morning meeting last week, Stasia Steinhagen and family reminded all Barton students and their families to participate in The Barton Mileage Club. With about 20 families participating so far we ‘walked’ to Florida and saved 60 gallons of gas in two months. How far can we go when all the students and their family member participate? The students seemed to think we could ‘walk’ to both Africa and China by the end of the school year. Invitation letters and application forms to attend summer school will be sent home with students early next week. The summer program is designed for students in kindergarten through eighth grade who would benefit from additional instructional time in order to catch up to their grade level. Barton K-5 students will attend Burroughs Community School and Barton 6-8 graders will attend the summer program at Ramsey International Fine Arts School. More...

Barton Has Talent!
