English Language Learner (ELL) program

Barton has students from many different countries in our ELL (English Language Learner) program. Some of the countries respresented at Barton are: Albania, Ethiopia, Egypt, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Holland, Gambia, Togo, Mauritania, Iran, France, Russia, Somalia, Mexico and Vietnam.

Our students speak their native language at home and often know multiple languages. The number of ELL students varies each year and students who qualify for ELL services do not necessarily require them.

Students who are new to our program primarily focus on oral launguage skills. With our current staffing, we are able to provide pullout services to support our students' growth in academic English. Some of the pullout groups are focused on support for reading and academic vocabulary comprehension and other groups provide support for math language and comprehension.

Barton's ELL program has three teachers, Cynthia Wilson, John Dawson and Karen Karis. We also have a bilingual program assistant, Nasra Hassan.
