My husband and I have two children currently attending Barton Open and one who recently graduated from there.

My colleagues and I were often vying to be the lucky ones to work with kids from Barton Open School.  In another job, I worked with teams of Minneapolis High School teachers.  I heard from several teachers how they could usually spot a Barton student - they were the students who approached their work with a lot of creativity.

When we started the school search for our first child, I knew we needed a special place. He was an extremely active child, so active that we had concerns about how he would channel his energy and engage in school work.  One visit to Barton and I knew it was a good match.  I observed hands-on, experiential learning with a variety of small and big group interactions. In each classroom we visited there were many activities going on simultaneously, and each child appeared to be engaged at their level.  It was a very different environment than what I had observed in our community school.

Barton Open has been an exemplary model of how great public school education can be.  It would be a shame to dismantle a program that by any objective measure is working well at its existing location for so many kids from all walks of life and all parts of the city
