Room 214 October Newsletter

Dear Parents,                                                                        10-20-08

The State Capitol field trip last Wednesday was a great learning experience! In class we have been studying the three branches of government. At the Capitol we saw the spaces where all three branches function. The kids were able to propose, debate, and vote on a bill on the floor of the State House of Representatives. State Rep. Frank Hornstein (Barton Parent) walked us through the process.

In Math, we have been working on a unit where the students collect, describe, interpret, and represent data through surveys, graphs, and line plots. We will also do some activities with probability of events.

Photos of both the Capitol trip, and Math activities can be seen on room 214’s page at Look for a few Friday Letters from the kids to be posted every 2 weeks as well.

In Science we just finished a unit studying water. We explored concepts such as surface tension, evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Tomorrow we will visit the elders at Walker Senior Club for the first time this year. We have been reading stories, writing, and having discussions about aging in preparation for our monthly visits. We will play Name Bingo and some other getting acquainted activities.

The first week in November will be our first swimming week at the Blaisdell  YMCA. We will only be swimming on Nov. 5th, 6th, and 7th because that Monday is a release day and we have a field trip to see/hear the Minnesota Orchestra on Tuesday Nov. 4th. Look for a permission slip to come home with your child for both of these activities by the end of this week.

If you have any questions about these activities or upcoming events feel free to call me at 668-7900.

Thanks, Mark
