About Flory

This is my 31st year teaching. I taught in bilingual programs in Austin, TX and Milwaukee, WI prior to moving to Minneapolis. Before arriving at Barton Open, I taught at Webster Open, Chiron, and Emerson Spanish Immersion Learning Center. This is my sixth year at Barton and I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of this vibrant community.

I grew up on the west side of Detroit, (my students know the importance of said distinction). I received my Bachelors in Bilingual Education from UW-Madison and my Masters

in Second Language Acquisition from the University of Minnesota.

I live in Minneapolis with my husband Dave, a social studies teacher, and our three children – Eamon, Siobhan and Dash. I love traveling and a recent highlight was a family stay in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala through Casa Xelajú.

My interests include literature, languages, sports and music. My current challenge is learning to play cumbias on the accordion.

In addition to teaching Language Arts and Spanish,
I coach the Girls’ Basketball Team and the Debate Team, and facilitate Drama and Model UN. I love teaching to my passions and learning from my students as well. Spoken Word is a vital component of our classroom and, thanks to my students’ encouragement, I have been known to rap upon occasion.
