Dear Families,

We have been having a busy fun Spring in 116 & 118.

During Writing Workshop we have been working on creating Realistic Fiction stories. We talked about the elements of Realistic Fiction: that the characters need to seem like real people, and the events that happen need to be things that could happen in real life. One morning we put on name tags and pretended to be our fiction characters. It was tricky keeping all the ‘new’ students names straight! (Jasper, Daisy, Pearl, Pete, to name a few). Now we are turning our stories into series. We would like empty cereal boxes to hold our writing collections. As your family finishes with cereal, send the boxes in!

Our current science unit is Air and Weather. Balloon rockets, pinwheels and bubbles are some of the tools we have used to find evidence about how air and wind move. We have been going outside more often to do our experiments and enjoy the beautiful spring weather.

We are having a guest teacher from the Midwest Food Connection. Emily Houser is doing a series of lessons on food, nutrition and gardening. Today children chose to plant kale, cucumber, or cherry tomato seeds. They will bring their plants home in three weeks.

Upcoming Events:

MAP Testing:

5/11 Reading: 7:45 – 8:45 116

8:45 – 9:45 118

5/12 Math 7:45 – 8:45 116

8:45 – 9:45 118

School Spirit Week The Middles students have planned a school spirit week. Here’s the schedule:

5/19 Dress wacky and tacky + Get Up and Dance day

5/20 Barton t-shirts day or wear Barton colors:red & black

Participation is optional. Whatever kids wear, they still need to be able to move freely and play at recess.

5/19 Chutes and Ladders Picnic and Field Trip  Field trip slips will be coming home soon. This is a fun end of year celebration. We love to have parent volunteers help with this field trip!

6/3 Lake Day- (It’s called Lake Day, but we never go anywhere near the water!) This is a school wide event at the Lake Harriet Bandshell, followed by a bring your own bag lunch picnic and play time. We need parents to help with this day. Let us know if you can come along.

6/7 Portfolio Sharing 7:30 – 9:30 am Plan on spending half an hour viewing your child’s work.

We need the following items:

Clorox Wipes, empty Cereal boxes, Snacks

News from 116 & 118
Dear Families,

We are beginning our study of electricity.  A major outcome of this unit is to help students recognize the importance of electricity in our daily lives.  Our unit will last until mid January. The first experiment students tried was using a mini bulb, a piece of wire and a battery and trying different arrangements to see if they could light the bulb.  There was lots of persistence and kids planned and tried different ideas.  Once a working arrangement was discovered, it spread across the class generating lots of light and excitement!.    We are asking for families to help us with two things:  1.  We need donations of D batteries for an electricity/art project that we are planning. 2.  As a homework assignment, help your child count the number of lights in your home.  These lights might be regular reading lamps, overhead lights, night lights or lights in appliances, such as ovens or refrigerators, or indicator lights that help us to know if an appliance is on or off or any other kind of lights at home.  Read more...

Reading and Writing Workshop

We are working on becoming independent readers and writers. During writing workshop, we are learning to be the boss of our own writing. Instead of asking a teacher if a topic is okay to write about or how to spell a word correctly, we are asking ourselves these questions and using what we know about the sounds in words to spell them as best we can. In reading, we’re working on stamina. This week we made it up to 7 minutes!  Read more...
