January Update
Thursday, January 23, 2014 6:20 PM

Happy Chilly New Year All!  Although we have had a somewhat erratic start to 2014 the students have been focused and we are moving along with our learning.  Here are some important activities and events coming in the next few weeks:

  • The trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts that was canceled today will be rescheduled for some time in late February or early March.
  • Next week on Wednesday Jan. 29th we will visit the Walker Senior Center (9:30-11:45) and do a snowman craft project. We could use 1 or 2 parent volunteers to help with this visit. Email me if you are able to come. Hopefully the weather will cooperate! Also, our February visit is scheduled for the Wednesday the 12th.
  • Friday Jan. 31st will be our mid-year portfolio sharing from **8:00-9:00  a.m** (Time changed due to Morning Meeting). Please plan to come for about 20 minutes during that time to see samples of your child’s learning from the first half of our school year. This will help us set goals for the second half of the school year. Attached is a mid-year goal setting conference sign-up. I will also send a hard copy with the kids tomorrow
  • This week’s Home Reading Log assignment is posted online under Assignments. Please help your child remember to bring their Home Reading Log journal to school with them every Wednesday.
  • In Math we have about a week remaining on our Data Collection and Graphing unit. I sent some homework relating to these skills last week and it will be due tomorrow. Look for another small packet of activities to come home tomorrow and the kids can work on these next week. Soon 3rdgraders will move on to addition and subtraction of numbers up to 6 digits and 4th graders will move on to division of 1 digit to 3 digit numbers.
  • Our Earth Materials Science unit in class is wrapping up next week as well. We have been learning the difference between rocks and minerals and are doing a variety of experiments to identify certain minerals in different types of rocks.
  • Our next week for swimming at the Blaisdell YMCA will be Feb. 24th-27th.

Thanks for your continued support with all these projects!

December Update
Sunday, December 15, 2013 10:30 PM

Dear Families,
It has been wonderful seeing the creative artwork and learning about the lives and techniques of such a variety of artists the past two weeks! I am looking forward to one more week of presentations.

We have started a new Science unit called Earth Materials where we are learning many concepts about rocks and minerals.

In Math the 4th graders finished up a unit on algebra and the 3rd graders finished with multiplication/division. We will certainly come back to these concepts during the year, but for now both 3rd and 4th graders are going to move on to a unit working with collecting, analyzing and representing data with a variety of graphs.

We are continuing our work with geography by focusing on features of Minnesota and also study Minnesota history through our Minnesota Studies Weekly magazine.

This Wednesday 12/18 will be our next visit to Walker Senior Center. We will leave at 9:30 and be back to school at about 11:30. If you plan to help chaperone please send me a quick email just to confirm you are coming. Thanks much!

There is another fabulous Choir Concert this Friday in the Commons at 7:30 a.m.

Please mark your calendars on Friday January 31st for our mid-year portfolio sharing from 7:30-8:30 a.m. The students will share lots of samples of their learning and shortly after that we will begin mid-year goal setting conferences.
Thanks again for all your support and have a great Holiday Season! Mark

Upcoming activities and events - Early October
Tuesday, October 1, 2013 10:50 PM

Dear Parents of Room 214,
I just wanted to give a quick reminder of some upcoming activities and events:

  • Please help your child remember to bring their Home Reading Log to school tomorrow. This week's prompt is posted online.
  • Last Thursday I sent home a math packet for homework. It showed some examples of the kind of work we have been doing in school; multiplication with 1 and 2 digit numbers with 4th graders and addition/subtraction strategies of three digit numbers with 3rd graders. The math packet is due this Thursday, October 3.
  • We have been writing poetry the last few weeks and on Friday Oct 4, we will have 6-8 kids sharing their poems during the All School Morning Meeting bright and early at 7:35.
  • On Friday we will also go to Wild River State Park to learn more about Minnesota prairies and harvest a variety of prairie plant and wild flower seeds. Permission slip must be turned in. The kids will need a bag lunch, warm clothes and rain gear. Parents are certainly welcome to join us!
  • Picture day is Monday October 7th.

Thanks for your support!  Mark
