Kristin’s Class Newsletter
Clara Barton Open School April 16, 2012

Dear Families,
Although we’re hoping she come back and volunteer all spring, it’s Sally’s last official week with the class. I have treasured Sally’s energy and care with our class, and wish her well as she begins her job hunt.

Last Week
It was exciting last week to meet Sally’s dad, Nigel Wattrus, who is a professor of geophysics at UMD. He made a timeline that showed us how far away the beginning of time really was. The timeline went up and down the main hallway three times!

Metamorphic, Igneous and Sedimentary Rocks.
One is like a squashed sandwich, one is like a melted and cooled crayon, and one is like a squished Laffy Taffy. Your kids can tell you which is which!

This Week
We will travel ahead in time to the period when Minnesota’s first people settled the land. We will read favorite legends from the Ojibway and Dakota people, and learn a little about life in the forests and prairies.

Next week
We will learn about pioneers! We are going to power down the classroom on April 24 (Tuesday) and try to get along for a whole day without electricity. We are hoping you will feel inspired to play along at home, in honor of earth day. We’re still in the planning stages, but if you’ve got a pioneer dress or sunbonnet you’ve been dying to wear, go for it!

Wanna be in a Movie?
Rob Walstead, Connor’s dad, is making a movie at Barton, and he needs lots of kids to be in it. Look for a letter in your BEE book that tells all the details.

Talent Show
Our friends Mette Aarshiem and Graham Doyle were both accepted into the talent show on Friday, April 20. There are two parts to the show. Look on the bugle for details. Congrats to Mette and Graham!

“Day Camps”
Sometimes we go to camp to work on a special skill, sometimes to learn something new, sometimes to experience new kids! Last week we started four “camps”- handwriting camp, Farkle camp, money camp and story camp. They were an epic hit! This week we will have five different camps, with some parent help. We will do camp Tuesday through Friday from 12:15. Can you help? Let me know!
Thanks! Kristin and Sally
