Census 2010: Door Knocking

Minneapolis surpasses 2000 census participation rate
As of Wednesday, April 28, the last day the Census Bureau released participation rates, 76 percent of occupied Minneapolis households have returned their Census form, surpassing the 2000 participation rate of 68 percent. This rate is also the highest in the country among cities over 300,000. This success can be attributed to the hard work of the Minneapolis Complete Count Committee and its many partners.

Open your doors to census takers

On May 1st, census takers began going door-to-door to roughly 25 percent of households in Minneapolis. A census take may visit your home if:

·         You did not mail back a census form

·         You returned an incomplete census form

·         You mailed back your form after April 16

·         You filled out a “Be Counted” form or responded over the phone

·         A census form was not mailed to your house.

If a census taker knocks on your door, please answer and respond accordingly. A census taker is a person from your community who is hired by the Census Bureau to make sure that your neighborhood gets represented as accurately as possible. The census taker’s primary responsibility is to collect census information from residences that have not sent back their 2010 Census form. The census taker will ONLY ask the questions that appear on the census form. Your answers to these questions are 100 percent confidential. Learn more about your Census Taker.

By answering the census you are standing up for your community's needs and helping to ensure that you receive your fair share of federal funding and political representation. That's why opening your door to census takers is so important.
