Dear Families,

This week our theme during our Morning Meetings has been 'Friendship'.  We have been exploring the dynamics of friendship: how to make new friends, qualities that are important in friendship such as listening, honesty and empathy.  We are off to a good start building a positive, caring community in our classrooms.

The science unit we are working on right now is Force, Balance and Motion.  Our first set of explorations were around the concepts of balance.  We experimented with ways to get different shapes to balance adding counterweights to assist in the process.  We learned how to test whether or not an object was in a stable position by lightly pushing it and seeing if it would settle back into place.  We are partnered with Chuck's 7th and 8th Grade Homeroom for Upper Buddies.  They worked with us this week, testing a series of shapes using clothespins as counterweights and testing whether or not we could get the shape to balance in a stable position.

For the month of September we are having Tuesday visits from Haruko from the Midwest Food Co-op.  She does a series of lessons about nutrition.  The first time she came she talked about 'local' food, then took kids out into our own Barton Spirit Garden for a scavenger hunt, looking for tomatoes, eggplant, squash blossoms, and a variety of flowers.  On her more recent visit she taught kids about different types of vegetables: seed holders, roots, and leaves.  Kids worked in small groups to make and eat salads!

October 15th is our designated conference day.  We'll be sending home a sign up sheet soon.

If you would prefer to receive our classroom updates through email., please send a message to either one of us and we'll add you to our contact list.

Enjoy the beautiful weather this weekend with your family!
