Children explore similarities and differences in organisms to become more aware of the diversity of life.  Students discover that all organisms have similar basic needs, such as food and water, and that organisms also have specific individual needs as well.

Students participate in activities focused on the ideas that electricity travels through wires.  Children light a bulb with a battery, test materials that might carry electricity, make a simple circuit, investigate insulators, and explore some ways electricity carries out work.

Balance and Motion

The Balance and Motion Module has students balance cardboard shapes and pencils, make mobiles to explore balance, counterbalance, and stability.  They investigate spinning motion with tops, zoomers, and whirlers, and rolling motion with wheel-and-axle systems, rolling cups, and marbles in runways.

Solids and Liquids

The Solids and Liquids Module provides experiences that heighten students' awareness of the physical world.  Matter with which we interact exists in three fundamental states: solid, liquid, and gas.  In this module first and second graders have introductory experiences with two of these states of matter, solid and liquid.
