Grade 4 MATHEMATICS Newsletter

Dear Room 209 Parents,
Here is what your child is currently learning and reviewing in math along with some specific ways you can help.

NUMBER RELATIONSHIPS AND COMPUTATION
Students need to:
* Demonstrate mastery of basic multiplication and division fact families.
* Identify and apply multiples and factors of numbers
* Solve multiplication and division problems using a variety of
strategies.
* Solve problems using estimation techniques and number properties.

Examples:
1. Write the answer to make the given equation true and write
3 related facts.
3 X 8 = ____

2. List all of the factors of 24.
3. Write 4 multiples of 7.

Sample responses:
1. 3 X 8 = 24 8 X 3 = 24
24 ÷ 3 = 8 24 ÷ 8 = 3

This demonstrates the commutative property (the turn around rule.)
2. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
3. 7, 14, 21, 28

Problem Solving Example:
Seth has 27 boxes of cookies. Each box contains 5 cookies.

a. Estimate the total number of cookies.

b. Use what you know about estimation to explain how you found
your answer.

A sample response might be
27 is close to 30. and
30 X 5 = 150.*

or
27 is close to 25**.
A quarter is 25 cents and 4 quarters are 100 cents so
100 + 25 = 125.

* We have been practicing taking zeros
off to make the multiplication
easier, then adding the zeros back on.

** 25 is also a landmark number,
which can be used to make
computation easier; other landmark
numbers are 10, 50, 100, 1000, etc.

Ways Parents Can Help Practice finding factors of a number.

For example, give your child a set of 24 objects. Ask your child to show all the ways 24 can be divided to make equal groups.

The factors can be determined by observing the number of equal groups and the number of objects in each group.
1 group of 24 or 24 groups of 1
2 groups of 12 or 12 groups of 2
3 groups of 8 or 8 groups of 3
4 groups of 6 or 6 groups of 4

Factors of 24: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24

A fact triangle can be used as an alternative to traditional flash cards. Cover up one of the numbers to see if your child can determine the missing number from the fact family. Practice writing related facts.
