December 2, 2012 Weekly Update

Dear Families,

If you’re like me, you’ve had a busy weekend and still find yourself with a long list!  Following the Thanksgiving break, I was really thankful that we had four full weeks of school before Winter Break.  Now, I can’t believe it’s down to three!

We had an engaging time last week preparing for, visiting, and then reflecting on the Raptor Center.  The students represented Barton well with their good listening skills and meaningful questions.  We also had an opportunity to interview a trumpet player and attend the Minnesota Sinfonia concert, meet with our “Buddies,” and start a new chapter book together entitled “Gooney Bird Greene.”

Gooney Bird is giving us a chance to listen to some well told “absolutely true” second grade stories and an opportunity to consider character traits and how they direct a story.

With 63 days of the school year in, I’m noticing that our work times are longer and quieter and we’re moving through curriculum more quickly.  I’m excited with the plans we have for the upcoming weeks.  This week we’re going to focus in on the human skeleton.  We’ll learn about its’ form and function.  We’ll use that information later in the month, as we dissect owl pellets to discover the skeletal remains of much smaller creatures.  We’ll also begin a mini-research project on the lives and habits of owls.

If you have the time, a fun website to check out and learn more about raptors is

Finally, a couple of things to watch for on Monday include:  December Reading Calendar (please return November calendar this week), Daily Math Packet homework (due Mon., Dec. 10th), completed Reflection Card (please sign and return), a field trip permission slip for our upcoming visit to the Center for Book Arts.  If you are interested in joining us on that trip, please leave a note at the bottom of slip.  There will again be a lottery drawing to determine who will join us.

As always, thanks for your continued support and commitment to your child’s learning!   One more thing...we'll be visiting the Media Center to exchange books on Thursday.  We forgot last week!!
