The Earth Balloon

The Earth Balloon came to visit Barton on Friday, February 4, 2011. The upper primary and middles classes took turns visiting it and learned lots of fun facts about the earth. For example:

  • The Space Shuttle flies about 200 miles high -- that would be about 6" above the surface of the Earth Balloon.
  • The Shuttle takes about 90 minutes to go around the earth once.
  • Tectonic plates pushing on each other pushed the earth's crust up and created mountains -- like Mt. Everest.
  • There are mountains under the ocean -- and when they stick up above the surface they make islands.
  • There are 24 time zones around the earth.
