Form and Function

Form and Function

Due date:

During our Friday Architect meetings we have been investigating the ideas
of form and function by “studying” spoons. Today you witnessed the very
exciting Spoon Challenge between Patty and Penny!

Each spoon that was presented had a unique form and specific function.
The spoons that were shared varied by size, shape, color, and material.
There were also variations in how each spoon was intended to be used
(function). Pretty amazing, right? Right!

Now it is time for you to have a Form and Function challenge!
Look around your house and/or garage for an object that has
different variations. Assemble them in one location (if you can)
and study them.

What do you notice? Think about the basic form of the objects
in your collection. How are they similar? How do they vary?
Notice how the form (shape and material) has been changed
to meet another need or use (function).

Some suggestions are: chair, box, writing tools, bowls. These
are just some ideas. They are not the only objects with variations.
Take some time to just look around. Ask family members for
ideas. Be creative.

Name the object that you used to start your collection of variations.

Plan for sharing. You can bring in your collection of variations, a photo of
the collection, or a list of all items in the collection.
