We had our first meeting on Thursday, August 28. We have 25 parent representatives and 8 teachers and staff. Nasra Hassan, Barton parent and bilingual program assistant in our ELL program, completes our three co-chair team.

We discussed two ongoing school issues that Barton is working to address: uppers electives and middles class sizes. There is a temporary solution for this year’s uppers that tries to balance providing elective opportunities to students as well as two years each of science and social studies, and reflects our open education principles. Once enrollment settles out in the first few weeks of school, we will know more about class sizes.

At our first meetings of the year the Leadership Council sets the Barton Foundation budget. Last year our school community raised $105,000. We will put this money to good use at Barton during the 2014/15 school year. A significant change this year is the Foundation will not be paying the salaries of the band and strings teachers. For the first time in many years they will be part of the Barton school budget. On Thursday we allocated funds to every classroom and specialist teacher at Barton for supplies, and additional resources for music and for art. We will finalize the budget at our September meeting. Thank you for the hard work spent raising the funds that will support our school this year!!

Finally, we are introducing “work groups” at the Council to help grow our capacity as a school leadership group. We hope parents beyond the Council members will participate. More to come on this.
