Dear Barton families,

I hope you had a peaceful and relaxing Spring Break. It is hard to believe that we only have nine weeks left in the school year (particularly with new snow accumulating on the ground this week!) In the weeks leading up to Spring Break included a lot of angst throughout the community regarding $25 million in budget cuts throughout the district. Barton was not immune to these cuts, but district leaders have shown support by finding more allocations that have helped us sustain and in some cases even enhance our programming. Please feel comfortable contacting me directly if you want additional clarification or information concerning how the district budget plan has impacted our programming at Barton Open School.

Despite the snowy weather we are experiencing this April, I hope everyone will encourage our students to get out in the neighborhoods and “sell green plants” over the last few days of the Barton Plant Sale. We’ve been very fortunate as a school community to have the financial support that comes from this spring fundraiser. Although all of us wish the allocations we receive from the district (via the state) would be enough to cover all essential components of our school program, most of you know that simply has not been the case for many years and is certainly still a factor this year. This year we are depending upon our own fundraising efforts to support our instrumental music program (band and strings), a reading tutor position, and essential materials, supplies and curriculum.

Every Barton family’s contribution to the plant sale will make a huge difference in our school’s ability to offer the kind of program we desire for our kids. While the snow comes down, invest in Barton and a “greener” Spring! Thank you!
