Dear families,

As 2013 comes to a close, I want to say how grateful we are to the Barton Open community for the support we give our students. Our partnership helps create a strong school that focuses on our mission of developing active, socially conscious, life-long learners. Thank you for your commitment to our children.
With that said, let me highlight a few events coming up in January and February for your calendar. These things come up quickly once we return and you all should plan for them:
The Uppers program has scheduled its first semester Exhibition/Portfolio Sharing Night on Tuesday, January 21st from 5:30 – 7:30 PM. Parents of 7th and eighth graders will receive additional information about Exhibition Night from Uppers teachers. Please plan to attend this important event.
We will have three parent events scheduled in the weeks after winter break. On January 22nd, from 7:30 – 9:00, parents can drop in for an informal conversation and have “coffee with the principal”.
On Tuesday, January 28th, parents are invited to a Barton 101 session from 6:00 – 7:30 in the DeLapp Commons. Barton 101 is an opportunity for Barton parents to learn more about the educational philosophy and teaching practices that are central to an open school program. There will be a combination of large group and small group learning experiences that evening.
Monday, February 10th is African-American Parent Involvement Day, parents of African-American students throughout the district will be invited to site-specific events. At Barton, African-American parents will be invited that morning from 7:30 – 8:30 for dialogue about racial equity at Barton Open.
That night, Monday, February 10, all Barton parents are invited to the DeLapp Commons from 6:30 – 8:00 for a session on educational and racial equity. We will engage in conversation about how these important educational issues play out at Barton Open School and how we can work together authentically as a whole community for all students.
Enjoy the winter break with your family - we are looking forward to a wonderful new year!
