From the Principal
Wednesday, May 21, 2014 9:30 AM

Dear Barton families,

I am sending this letter let you know that I have been honored to serve this community as the principal of Barton.  I see beautiful things happening within the classrooms and throughout the hallways every day and am grateful for the village of people who come together to support our students.  The relationships I have formed with so many of you in a short time have made my most recent decision a very difficult one.

I have accepted an offer to serve as the Director of Leadership Development for St. Paul Public Schools next year.  I am excited to be a district leader, doing work that aligns with my values around equity and urban education.  I will have the chance to learn from and work directly with the Superintendent to coach, mentor, and supervise the professional development of all principals and assistant principals in St. Paul.  The opportunity to improve school performance, strengthen racial equity, and encourage active, socially conscious, student learning  -like we have at Barton - is exciting. This position is a great opportunity for me to continue to grow as a leader and directly impact the school leaders of an entire city while doing work that I love.  Although I will miss this community dearly, I look forward to this new educational challenge.

Barton is in great hands with the expertise of the staff, the passion of the parents, and their partnerships with our student leaders who are increasing their voice each day.  Due to our Superintendent’s commitment to Open education and educational equity, we will have more resources and staff in our building next year, directly serving students, than we have ever had.  We have a solid foundation for what will prove to be a smooth transition for our school.

I will continue to serve at Barton as principal until June 30th.  The district is committed to find the best leadership match for Barton Open School. In the coming weeks, MPS will be working with the leadership council and school staff to help identify the qualities and characteristics of a school leader that are important to the Barton school community. They have informed me that they expect to announce the new principal by the end of the school year and have opportunities for the principal to introduce himself or herself to students, families and staff in the coming months.  Holly and I will work closely with the new principal to ensure a smooth transition. Please reference the letter from Cecilia Saddler on our webpage that details more about the process.

I have been honored to serve this remarkable school community as your principal.  I am humbled by the will of our community to serve all children and the skill of our staff to help all students reach their full potential.  What a joy to have been a part of this tradition of progressive education!

In gratitude,
