January 24th- Conferences
Express Yourself!
Next week we will begin our new unit called Express Yourself. Throughout this unit we will study different authors. This will allow us to examine the art of illustrating, writing and general storytelling. We will also be reading My Father’s Dragon and will perform the play before spring break.
Book Club Volunteers
Are you interested in volunteering for the next round of book clubs? We will start our new book club January 31st and it will run about 6-7 weeks. We meet from 11:15 to about 12:15. Let me know if you are interested. The sign up for new books will hopefully be coming home next week.
Artist in Residence
Next week we will start knitting with Jessica Crawford, our artist in residence for the next month. She will teach students basic knitting techniques. If you have said you could help with knitting, I’ll contact you once I know exactly when she is coming.
I am attaching a conference sign-up for January 24th. Please fill out the form or email me the times you are available. If you are busy that day we can work a different time out.
Demonstration Project
Hopefully the projects are near completion and can come to school on Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, students will be sharing their work with the class. On Friday, January 14th we will have our Barton Market where parents can come and check out projects and the work we have been doing throughout To Market, To Market. Be prepared to go shopping! We do have an all school morning meeting on Friday so our marketplace will begin about 8:00.
Read and Respond
Kristin and I have been talking about how students read independently and, more importantly, how they process the information they take in. So we are going back to the Seven Keys to Comprehension and we’re putting them in bookmark form. Each child this week will be doing a “read and respond.” This isn’t new. What is new and exciting (especially to us) is a bookmark with each way of processing text. A copy of the bookmark will be attached to the homework this week. When you are reading, ask your child to finish the sentence starters. You may be surprised at their answers!
